They say that before you die, you see your life flash before your eyes. All of the good times you had, with your family and friends. Everything that made you happy. You see yourself grinning and having fun, or smiling contentedly while lounging with a cup of coffee and Sunday morning cartoons.

That's not what Gabriel saw.

He knew it was idiotic to have expected it. And he hadn't really expected it. But he'd wanted it. He didn't want to see Lucifer's stoic (regretful) face. He wanted to see what it had been like before. When they'd been happy.

When they'd been brothers.

He heard Lucifer speak, but he couldn't make out the words. He didn't particularly care to. He didn't want to know what his big brother had said. His favorite big brother, the one who had promised "brothers 'til the end," was, naturally, the one to kill him. Keeping promises had never been Lucifer's strong point.

He knew he should have stayed away. He knew he should have left Kali and the Winchesters. They would have found a way out. They always did. And if not, Michael and Lucifer would just have brought them back to life. He should have left.

But he didn't.

Damn Dean and his stupid way with words. And now he was going to die.

And yet, for some reason, Gabriel didn't mind. It seemed oddly right, to die defending the humans. Defending the Winchesters.

And the last thing to go through Gabriel's mind was, I guess I really am sentimental.

I noticed that the date was May 19th (5/19) so, since Hammer of the Gods is one of my favorite episodes, I figured I would write something for it.
