Goodbye's are a state of Mind.

Short chapter is short! This is just in introductory chapter, more like an epilogue then anything else. I promise all the other chapters won't be this short! lol.

Link took one last look at his childhood home and a shiver ran down his spine. He knew that he would never be able to call this place home again. The Great Deku tree was dead, in his satchel he could feel the lumpy, awkward shape of the Kokiri Emerald. He was certain that jerk Mido was telling anyone who would listen, that he had killed the forest spirit. He clenched his fists, angry, the Deku Tree was his father like all the other Kokiri!
He felt a small tug on his hat, bringing him back to himself. The little blue sprite circled around him in a reassuring way. "Come now, Link. The great Deku Tree entrusted us." She said, her voice high pitched and sharp. Link turned his back on the Kokiri, and journeyed his way to the forests edge.
The air slowly changed, and the foliage became less dense as he traveled on, a small jolt of fear thrilled through him and he hesitated. Every Kokiri who had ever left the forest was never seen or heard from again.
"You're going to leave without saying goodbye?" A voice said, hurt, startling Link. He whipped around quickly.
"Saria!" He gasped. His friend, for as long as he could remember, stood before him with her hands on her hips. Saria's forest green hair was held back by a headband, she was wearing her usual green jumpsuit, cutoff at the knees with a teal turtleneck seater on underneath, with green knee-high boots.
"I…I'm sorry." Link stammered. He looked down at his leather boots, he had hoped not to see Saria as he left, the parting would be too painful.
"It's ok," Saria said, smiling sadly. "I knew you would leave one day. Everyone does." She cupped her hands, her pink fairy friend landed in them lightly. Saria was one of the oldest Kokiri, she had been around longer then anyone left in the forest. "I've seen so man others pass through the border, gone from our world. I had hoped you would be around longer…" She trailed off, biting her bottom lip, fighting off tears. "Saying goodbye is too sad, though." She continued, her voice wavering just slightly.
"I know. We'll say, 'Until we meet again'." She smiled, tears running down her cheeks. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her ocarina. "Keep this. That way we'll stay connected wherever you go. So, you won't forget me. Us. All of us." She motioned to the forest around her, and handed Link the Instrument, which he took in a shaking hand. Saria's ocarina, her treasured item, was smooth and the color of earth. He was at a loss for words and could only stare at his friend mouth agape.
"Promise me you'll come back." Saria said in almost a whisper. Looking down at the carpet of grass. Link nodded, unable to speak. He turned and ran towards the forests edge, not wanting to lose his resolve. He could hear Saria shouting after him as he passed beyond the tree line.
"You had better come back! You promised!!"

If you are wondering why I omitted Navi and Links meeting, the first dungeon, Ghoma, and all that, it's because I figured it would be too long-winded, boring, and pointless. The Deku Tree talks your head off in the game, why go through it all again? The next couple chapters follow the game fairly close, but I plan on branching out, so no worries, I'm just setting the scene. ;D
