IT HAPPENED ON A RAINY MOTHER'S DAY

Sunlight peeked through the window, gently rousing to consciousness the couple nestled in the cozy sheets of their bed. It promised a beautiful new day, full of its own unique wonders and surprises. Chloe Luthor sighed deeply, a small smile of contentment appearing on her face. Lex her husband of four years sleepily wound his arms around her slender form from behind, drawing her closer to himself.

"Lex, honey," Chloe said softly, opening her eyes to the morning sun, "how much do you love me?"

"Lots," he murmured, his eyes still closed.

"How much?" she asked again, her hand absently drifting to her abdomen.

"Lots," he repeated, still content to stay in dreamland.

"Do you love me enough to share me?" she whispered, her voice coy, yet hesitating.

At this comment, his eyes snapped open, and he sat bolt upright in their bed. "What!?" He glared at Chloe. "Are you having an affair?"

Chloe hoisted herself up to sit next to Lex. She put her hand upon his shoulder, squeezing it slightly; he refused to look at her. "Lex, look at me," she said, grasping his chin and gently forcing him to meet her eyes.

Lex was shocked by the mirth he found in his wife's eyes. They sparkled with an unspoken joy she was feeling. For the first time, he noticed that her other hand was resting lightly on her abdomen. Realization dawned, and his harsh glare immediately softened to a look of shocked amazement. "You mean we're going to have a." he trailed off.

"Baby, Lex. The word is baby. And, yes, we are," Chloe retorted with a grin.

"But.but.when.how." Lex stuttered. He'd truly been caught off-guard by Chloe's announcement. They'd recently considered the idea of having children, but he had been clueless as to how much of a reality it was.

"When?" Chloe said coyly. "Remember that rainy day about a month and a half ago?"

Lex nodded silently.

"You made the fire in the study. I was standing at the window, watching the rain cascade down the glass."

"You'd planned a surprise picnic for me," Lex added. "You were upset because of the weather. I told you that not even Luthors could control it."

"That made me smile. Then, you told me that we'd make our own fun."

"You wondered how." Lex smiled in amusement at the memory. "Poor bearskin rug; it didn't fare so well."

"I should've known better than to ask. Speaking of wondering how things happened, I shouldn't need to explain basic biology to you, husband-mine, but" Chloe began.

"Hands-on demonstrations are better examples," he interrupted. Lex loomed over her, a hunger in his eyes which Chloe knew well.

"Oh, is that so?"

Lex merely smirked. Reaching out, he tenderly cupped his wife's cheek. His hand wove itself through her hair, and he pulled her into him for a passionate kiss. Lex lowered Chloe to the pillows once more, intent on learning his biology lesson.

"Lex," Chloe gasped when they paused for breath, "that rainy day, I just realized, was Mother's Day."

Lex lowered himself to the point where his face was hovering mere inches from hers. "How appropriate," he murmured huskily, closing the remaining space.
