A/N: Well, I think I finally pinpointed why I relate to Elsa so well. This is one of those times where I just started typing with no clear goal. This is set right after the 'For the First Time in Forever' reprise. Enjoy!
Anna had just left the ice castle, and Elsa was a stoic, composed mess. She took a deep breath and held it as she looked at her reflection in a pane of glass. She walked toward her reflection, looking herself in the eye. Then, without warning, her eyes filled with tears and she gasped in pain. Elsa put her arms around her stomach, hugging herself, and leaned forward, the tears threatening to spill over. She stayed like that for a minute and then pulled herself upright. Taking another deep breath, she was once again the picture of emotionless icy perfection, her eyes hardly showing a trace of the tears that had just lingered there.
She wasn't sad. She had no reason to be, right? Olaf and that man were taking care of Anna. No one would ever bother Elsa again. She was keeping Anna safe by driving her away, Elsa knew that. However, there was a twinge, just a tiny little flicker, of doubt deep in Elsa's heart that she was doing her best to extinguish.
Arendelle would learn to cope with being in winter all the time. No doubt there exports and trade would change drastically. The town around the castle could become one of ice-salesmen, right? Yes, that will most certainly be how that worked out. Anna will assume the throne, aided by that prince. More likely than not he could figure out how to run a kingdom. Yes, indeed; it would take a while, but everything in the kingdom would work itself out. And, really, she was keeping them all safe by staying away, all by herself, wasn't she?
So why was she such a mess? By all logical means, Elsa should be happy now. She was keeping her only family safe. She was protecting everyone else, too. She was totally and utterly free. So why did she keep alternating between solid composure and an unstable fit of tears?
Maybe it was because she knew Anna still cared. Elsa knew Anna would always love her, which is what made this decision, no matter how logical, hard. Thinking back, it had been unhealthy, really, for Elsa to have been cooped up so long. She had been a ticking time bomb. Out here, though, Elsa was freer than she could have ever dreamed of being! It was gloriously invigorating, so why wasn't she content?
Elsa sighed to herself. She was doing the right thing for everyone and for her. Elsa just wished everyone else would accept her decision.
Elsa brought her hand up and lethargically shot a few blasts of snow out the window. It was the right choice, and, if given a little time, everyone would be able to see that.
Elsa wandered back to look at herself in the sheet of ice. She ran a hand through her hair and let out another sigh, and then smiled. No more negativity. She had made her choice.
