A/N: This is a response to a prompt over on FanFiction Fanactics on FB: She showed up at his door, soaking wet, bruised, and covered in glitter. I changed "she" to "he" and ended up with this.
When the doorbell rang, Steve McGarrett was surprised to find his partner, Danny Williams, on the other side. Not surprised that it was Danny, per se, but surprised that he'd bothered ringing the bell—Danny usually just barged right in. Also, Danny was sopping wet, sporting a black eye, and covered in—was that glitter? "You look like you were part of an art project gone wrong," Steve quipped. Actually, considering Danny had a four-year-old and a 14 year-old, that was entirely possible.
"Pretty much." Danny moved to come in, but Steve blocked him.
"Oh, no, you're not coming in here. You'll get glitter everywhere."
"Ah, c'mon," Danny whined. "I really need a beer."
Steve considered that for a moment. "Go sit on the lanai. I'll bring it out to you."
Steve fetched the requested beer and sat down in the chair next to Danny. "So, you want to tell me what happened?"
"Not really." Steve continued to look at him. The other man sighed. "Fine. Grace was working on an art project for school, and she insisted on using glitter. I told her it was a bad idea with Charlie around, but she wouldn't listen. Sure enough, Charlie grabbed the glitter and was about to dump it on the floor, so I went to take it from him. I may have been a little overzealous, and when he let go, the jar may have flown up and hit me in the eye."
Steve quirked an eyebrow. "Overzealous?"
"Yes, overzealous. Look it up."
"That explains the glitter and the black eye, but why are you wet?"
Danny sighed. "I may have decided it was a good idea to take a shower to try to wash the glitter out."
"In your clothes?"
"In retrospect, it may not have been the smartest idea I've ever had."
"You think?" Steve reached out a hand and touched Danny's cheek. "You still have some on your face." Steve rubbed the spot gently with his thumb.
Danny froze for a minute before leaning into the touch. "Stuff's a bitch to get out." He rubbed against Steve's hand like a cat, clearing enjoying the touch.
Steve knew they'd reached a turning point. What had started as an innocent touch had quickly turned not-so-innocent. Steve could either pull his hand back, pretend it had never happened, and go back to the way things had been, or he could lean forward, take Danny's lips with his own, and cross the line they'd been teetering on since practically the moment they met. Steve opted for the latter.
It was soft at first, hesitant, Steve not being sure at first how Danny would respond. The SEAL pulled back just slightly after a couple of seconds and searched Danny's face for a reaction.
He needn't have worried. The detective lurched forward and sealed his lips with Steve once more, harder this time. The kiss quickly grew heated. Steve wasn't sure whose mouth opened first, but soon their tongues were tangled together, fighting for dominance.
Finally, they pulled back. Danny looked at Steve and burst out laughing.
"What's so funny," Steve demanded.
"Now you're covered in glitter babe."
Steve reached up a hand to his face and, sure enough, it came away covered with glitter. He joined in Danny's laughter. Oh, well. It was worth it.
