"Sam, you wouldn't..." DS Stuart Turner began, looking away and out of the window of his car. He stopped mid sentence. Sam looked across at him.

"I wouldn't what?" Sam asked, completley clueless.

"You wouldn't fancy going out to dinner with me sometime would you?" Stuart asked, his gaze still fixed on something outside of the window.

Sam smiled to herself. She didn't reply straightaway and Stuart looked back at her wondering if he had said the wrong thing.

"Sorry I..." He began again, realising that it had been a mistake.

"No don't be sorry...yes I'd like to come out to dinner with you." Sam smiled, Stuart smiled too happy with Sam's decision.

"Hey Phil." Sam smiled walking into CID alone a while later. Sun Hill's other detective sergeant was seated at the desk beside Sam's.

"Hi Sam." He smiled looking up, pleased to see her.

"How was Cardiff? Is Alfie okay?" Sam asked, taking a seat and giving Phil her full attention.

"He's good thank you." Phil proudly pulled out a stack of photographs he had taken at the weekend whilst visiting his baby son in Wales. "How was your weekend?"

"Good thanks." Sam smiled, swiveling on her chair.

"Good. Getting on well with lover boy?" He asked.

Sam looked away feeling instantly guilty. "Shut it Phil." She said good naturedly.

Phil smiled his usual smug smile. "Some of us have actually got some work to do DS Nixon." He joked.

At the end of the shift Sam was picking up her jacket when Phil came up behind her.

"Whoa, you made me jump!" Sam said.

"Sorry." Phil smiled apologetically. "You fancy going to the pub tonight for a drink...as friends?"

Sam felt guilty again, she had agreed to go out for dinner with Stuart but she would really rather spend the evening with one of her closest friends. She felt torn between the two of them.

"I can't tonight...I'm sorry Phil but I've already got plans."

"That's okay." Phil replied, but he found it hard to hide his disappointment. "What have you got planned?"

Sam didn't want to tell him the truth but at the same time she couldn't lie.

"I've got a date." She said simply, her gaze slipping to the floor.

"Oh." Phil said, his disappointment growing. "Anyone I know?"

Sam felt her cheeks glowing red as she concentrated on the laminate floor.

"Actually yes...it's Stuart."

"Ohh." Phil said stretching the word out. "Well enjoy yourself." He added slowly, his eyes not wanting to meet hers either.

"Thank you Phil." She said looking up, their eyes met painfully for a second and Sam could see fills sorrow.

He turned and walked away from her, the doors swung as he pushed them opened and left the CID office. Sam watched him go, her heart sinking. Why was love always so complicated. Sam pulled her phone out of her bag and dialled Stuart's number, Phil may only ever be just a friend but she couldn't betray him like this; she wouldn't.

If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?
