BRIGHT LIGHTS
I stepped out into the balcony. It was a moonless night. Closing my eyes, I listened to the rustling of the leaves. It's unnerving silence. And then I knew. They had come.
The floor seemed to drag me down as I ran to my cousin's room. The manor was completely unlit and the corridors felt like never-ending labyrinths leading into the darkness, swallowing me up slowly. I finally reached his door, stumbling when it opened from the inside. I snapped my head up to meet a pair of cobalt blue eyes staring at me intently. "They--!" He cut me off with a hand on my face as he dragged me into the room and locked the door behind us.
"I know," he said solemnly, releasing his grasp. "I know."
"What do we do now?" I asked carefully, staring at him with the same intensity and intent. He knew what I wanted to do; I knew he could see the pride in my eyes. I'm not an idiot but I would rather die fighting in the end. Pride did always win my internal battles.
He bowed his head. His bangs covered his face. "No." He stood up and led me to the window. "You run."
"What do you mean?! You've always told me to fight my own battles. Why do I need to run away now?" I shouted, attempting to back away from the window, a firm arm kept me in place.
"This is not your battle! This-this mess is not your fault! You don't deserve to live through this! Put away your pride for now, your life is worth a lot more to everyone than just that."
"I'm not leaving you alone," I fought as he nudged me through the open window. I closed my eyes. "Why do you have to be the one to face this?"
I opened my eyes to see an expression on his face that, if I was a normal girl, would bring me to tears. He was smiling, I couldn't read anything from it, he was just smiling so sweetly at me that everything that I wanted to say just flew out this open window. "It'll all turn out fine," he said as he swiftly pushed me out of the window. "So don't worry yourself over me, ne, Mikan-chan…"
The fall was so familiar to me that I landed on my feet. Looking up, I saw the windows already bolted shut. "Tsubasa," The faint sound was wisped away by the wind, fading into the nothingness of this mordant night.
I scanned my surroundings and something caught my eye a few meters off in a bush. I silently crept towards it. Once I grabbed hold of it, I yanked it out. It was a black knapsack, with a rolled note sticking out of its flap. I opened it, it read:
You were always taught to survey your surroundings, so one way or another
I knew you would stumble upon this. Here's everything you need
on the trip, wherever you're going.
Tsubasa
P.S. I suggest you go North, the skiing there is awesome.
P.P.S. Don't kill anyone…Please
I sighed and plastered a slightly mirthful smile on my face. I picked the bag up and slung it over a shoulder. If he'd planned it this part there's no way I could have argued anything anyway. I'll cut him some slack and put some value on my life then.
I looked at then note again. North, huh…doesn't seem too bad. Better start now if I want to get to the next village by sunrise. I looked up at the sky again. I felt wetness roll down my cheeks; for the first time in years, I was crying.

the most massive characters are seared with scars."
