Chapter 1

Ingrid was very tired of having nothing to do during her holiday. "What's the point of a holiday," she mumbled to herself, "without an adventure?"

Because she was deep in thought she forgot to keep watching her feet. Before she knew it she had run into an old wooden door. The door squeaked open. "I might as well go inside", Ingrid thought, "for outside it is terribly cold and I wouldn't want to catch influenza." She strode forward with a bit more confidence than she felt.

The first things she spotted were a few toys. They were all quite dusty and Ingrid didn't want to touch them. She kept moving through the house and in the hall she saw something very curious. There was a pair of white ears sticking out from behind a dresser. As she moved closer she saw that it was not just a pair of white ears but an entire rabbit with pink eyes. "Hello sir, can I help you?"

The rabbit seemed startled and looked at his feet which, Ingrid now realised, were tucked into smart looking brown boots. When the rabbit spoke his voice was high with just a hint of a squeak. "No, no nothing to do, nothing to do at all."

Ingrid was surprised, if he was well, he certainly didn't look it. "Are you sure? You don't look at all well."

The rabbit seemed to focus for a second. "That's because I'm not you, idiot girl!" In his anger the rabbit's head shot up and his eyes stared into Ingrid's before suddenly jumped up and did a little dance. "Whoopee! Hooray it's you! I've found you. I don't have to spend any more time in this ghastly place! Follow me!" he quickly turned round and started running down the corridor. "How curious" Ingrid thought. The words sounded strange, almost as if she had already said them, somewhere else. Ingrid shook it off and started running after the rabbit.

She finally reached a room that was old and dark. Ingrid could see this because there was a thick sheet of dust on every surface. Ingrid looked up and noticed that the rabbit was nowhere to be seen. She looked around hoping to see a tuft of white but the only things she could see were tables covered in sheets, dust and cobwebs.

Ingrid sat down. When she did she accidentally pulled the sheets off one of the tables. Underneath the sheet there was a dusty black top hat and an old teapot. She tried the hat on. It fit perfectly and so she kept it. Now very curious, she started pulling the sheets off all the other tables. On one there was a packet of cards the size of a large cat, on another there was a dusty looking-glass, on yet another there was a chess set with all the pieces set ready for a match, and on the last there was a picture book.

Ingrid cautiously opened the picture book. It was a strange book for on it there were no words other than the title 'Alice in Wonderland'. The first page had a picture of a girl that looked remarkably similar to Ingrid. On the next there was a white rabbit in a waistcoat with a pocket watch. "Curiouser and curiouser" said Ingrid to no one in particular. Again the words sounded familiar. "That rabbit looks almost exactly the same as the rabbit that left just a few minutes ago." She quickly turned the page expecting to see another picture but instead she saw a blank page and all of a sudden everything went black and she started feeling like she was falling very fast.
