Karpe Diem
Here's my first fic on this site. Please review, even if you're gonna say that it's too dang short. (what do you expect out of a oneshot?)
Today's my day. Along with the rest of my school, I approach the docks. With muted splash sounds, the humans drop their bait into the water. I glance around with my wide staring eyes. Nothing. No Wailmer, no Carvahna, not even a Quilfish or a Tentacool. All I see is Karp. I have a chance!
You see, in this state, I cannot excel. It is just physically impossible for a Magikarp like myself to learn any attack more devastating than flail. It is every Karp's dream to be caught and kept. Why else would we bother taking the bait? Do you humans think we're that stupid? We want to be caught, for we wish to evolve. When's the last time you saw a Gyarados in the wild? Excluding, of course, that Red one. While evolving gives us a double weakness for electricity, it heightens our senses, gives us a better attack range, and makes us… valuable. When's the last time you abandoned your Gyarados? Didn't think so.
This is it. I can feel it in my scales. I am being carried toward the fishers by a warm current. That's just as well, as Magikarp aren't much good at swimming. I manage to maneuver myself into a position that allows me to grab a line. I give it a sharp tug. The angler above leaps with a start. They pull the line harshly and I feel myself being carried up… and up… and up. With a Splash I break the surface. I land on the hard wooden dock. The cool air stings a bit on my gills and the openness of non water scares me. The Human steps over me and looks down at me. He is at such a dizzying height, I wonder how he can stand.
"Karp, Karp," I greet him, "Hello, Trainer,"
"Aw, It's just another Magikarp," the person says. As he hefts me up by the string I hear him mutter, "Useless things," and say a curse or two.
Suddenly, I have the sensation of flying. Then with a crack I hit the water again. As I sink back into the depths, into the consoling fins of my comrades, I think, Next time. Tomorrow will be my day.
