AN: Hello, everyone! I'm sorry it's been so long since I've written a one shot, but school got really crazy… I hope you enjoy, and I'd love to hear some feedback!
Disclaimer: I don't own Kuroko no Basuke.
He took a deep breath, but it was as if smoke was filling his lungs instead of the oxygen he needed. The man whose name he'd forgotten took a step forward- he'd been too busy trying to keep himself upright to listen when they were introduced- and Aomine felt intoxicated despite having nothing but a few too many sodas in him at that point. There was so much red in front of him that he could practically taste it, and the eyes staring unflinchingly back at him burned so brightly that he'd be happy to be burned alive in them simply so he could feel an emotion so intense as they seemed to give off. In that moment, they spanned thousands of lifetimes, simply because they wanted to.
...
"I love you," Aomine whispered to Kagami, and it was quite possibly the most truthful sentence he'd ever uttered, even with his naturally straightforward nature. Still, it frustrated him to no end. Maybe the thought was cliche, but he wanted to shout his affection from the rooftops, so loud that Kagami would begin to blush, not speak it rushedly, a quiet hiss in the other's ear when they were absolutely positively sure no one was looking. Because he loved him, that was for sure, and he did not want to have to be afraid.
...
Kuroko was the only one who knew besides the two of them, and this was only because his introduction had caused this whole ordeal in the first place. He was also the only one who they could trust to still see them as themselves and not condemn them forever solely because of the way that they felt about each other.
Once they'd gotten just a bit too touchy feely in public, and the eyes they felt glued to their backs hurt more than a gunshot wound. The fearless Aomine Daiki spent the day practically trembling at the thought of their secret getting out and what might happen, and Kagami had to look on helplessly, unable even to comfort his boyfriend because maybe someone would notice and it would all be over.
At night, when they could be alone, it was still eternity, but eternity no longer felt pure and endless.
...
He still let out an 'I love you' when he could, but for the first time there was doubt in his mind as he spoke. If everyone else hated so much the idea of two men being together, then probably something was wrong with them and not the others who felt they were disgusting. Probably, it was their fault if everyone else seemed to feel so strongly about the matter.
Maybe his desperation had leaked through a bit too much, because for the first time ever Kagami squeezed his hand in public. They were in broad daylight, and surely everyone could see, but no one ran away screaming or tried to burn them at the stake.
The negative thoughts were not gone, but the smile he'd become addicted to certainly lessened the burden.
He decided it only made sense to press on.
