M.U. The Freshman Years

Chapter 1

When the world needs a pick-me-up, I'm the party-in-a-box.

Hey. I'm James Phil Sullivan, but you can call me Sulley.

All my friends do. I just wish I had some real ones...

I'm a famous monster because of my dad and who he is: Bill Sullivan, one of the best scarers of all time.

Not that I'm not as scary as he was. I'm probably scarier.

Do I sound cocky? Good.

Of course, since I'm his only son, I have to follow in his footsteps.

Not that I don't want to. I just want to be known as an individual. Not because of my dad's name.

The expectations are overwhelming sometimes... Even if I did flaunt my last name to get special treatment in high school. Don't judge me.

Sometimes I think I'd be better off if no one knew who I was. A clean slate sounds good to me.

Is orientation over yet? I'm out of dialogue.

And I gotta get ready for that ROR party tomorrow. I need to pick up a present for them... Heheh...

Sulley sat in the back of the auditorium as Dean Hardscrabble talked to the group of freshman. The orientation had barely started 30 minutes ago and he was, like every other monster in the room, bored out of his skull.

He got so bored, he started to count the times she said scare. So far it was 67 times in 5 minutes.

"Damn... This just keeps getting duller and duller..." Sulley thought groggily as he fell asleep propped up on his arm.

He woke up at least 10 minutes after the orientation ended looking well rested with dry drool at the corner of his mouth. He wiped it off quickly and exited the empty auditorium.

"I wonder what's for lunch." Sulley thought aloud as he walked through the lobby and out the door. But while he was distracted he bumped into a bear-like monster and fell flat on his ass.

"Who put a wall there?" Sulley grimaced as he looked up to see who was gonna get an earful of roar.

He saw a light green monster about his height with blue spots dotting his body rubbing his own injured rump. He looked like a scary teddy bear. And his shirt made Sulley laugh on the inside.

'Scary and cute at the same time... In a completely platonic way of course.'

Sulley heard the monster say something but didn't catch it because it was kind of hard to hear. He assumed it was an introduction so he decided to do the polite thing and go first.

"James P. Sullivan. But you can call me Sulley." He greeted as he held his hand out.

"I'm Chow Devower. It's nice to meet you." The monster replied as he shook Sulley's hand.

His was sweaty. He must've been nervous for some reason.

"Cool name. See you around." Sulley replied as he got up and walked off, but before he did he just had to give credit where credit was due.

"By the way... Nice shirt."

"Thanks." Chow replied a bit more confidently in Sulley's opinion as he entered the auditorium lobby.

"Cool guy. Gotta be an art major with a shirt like that." He thought to himself as he decided to grab a bite at The Growl before he went back to his room at the Jack the Ripper dorm.

Sulley gripped his bag of leftovers loosely as he walked into common room. He looked really relaxed and full as he threw the bag onto the front desk.

"Gary! Sup bro?" He called out to the guy behind the desk. He was a monster similar to Sulley, but with no horns and red fur.

"Sulley! How's my favorite cousin?"

"Enjoying campus life. What about you?"

"Just really hungry. I haven't eaten since breakfast."

"Hey… Want this Brontosaurus Burger?"

"Those things are godly… What's the catch?" Gary asked his smug looking cousin.

"Make sure I can keep my room to myself until ROR inducts me. As my D.A., only you can help me with this."

"Cut the spy movie clichés and you've got a deal." Gary grinned as Sulley slid him the bag and headed for the stairs.

Once he entered his comfy room, he decided to go over the plan to sneak into Fear Tech and take their mascot. Sadly, he still needed a point man to signal him if security was on his ass or even worse, Fear Tech jocks.

"Maybe that guy I just met would help me out... He seemed cool." He pondered a bit before he crashed on one of the beds in the room.

"Oh well... It's late and classes start tomorrow." He clapped his hands and shut the lights off, completely unaware a confrontation was taking place next door involving the monster he had just met.
