Today was it. My birthday. The big ol' 18. I couldn't stand it. Aspen and I hadn't spoken since the Selected girls were announced. Some Three from our Province had been selected. Sofi Cross. She had been eliminated very quickly.
Aspen. Aspen, Aspen, Aspen. Did I still love him? Completely. With my whole heart. Could I forgive him? It depended. He didn't seem to understand that marriage was a partnership. I didn't need to be babied. I didn't need to be taken care of all the time. I needed to be his equal.
"Mer?" I was jerked from my thoughts by a knock on the door. I recognized May's voice and smiled.
"Hi May. Come on in."
My red-haired sister entered my bedroom, looking as cute as can be. Her hair was up in two braids and she wore a pale green tank top along with black shorts.
"Kenna and James sent you a gift," she said. She handed me a package wrapped in white tissue paper and tied with a red string. I carefully took it and placed it on the bed.
"She says you're supposed to open it before the party," May instructed. "Since she and James can't come."
I swallowed the lump in my throat and sighed.
"Okay." I carefully unwrapped the package and gasped. Inside was a pale blue dress that buttoned up from the waist and a white ribbon.
"It's beautiful," I breathed, running a hand over the white fabric. It must have cost a fortune.
"May! America! Hurry up!" Mom shouted from downstairs. May giggled.
"Coming!" she squealed. She turned back to me and gave me a little shove. "Change faster!"
I did as May said, changing into the blue dress. I had already put on makeup and red flats, so I pulled my hair up into a ponytail. May gave me a quick hug before dragging me down the stairs.
In the kitchen, May turned to me again.
"Close your eyes," she said.
"May…"
"America, just close them!" I sighed and did as she asked.
May carefully led me outside. I carefully maneuvered the sagging steps of the back porch before wading through the freshly cut grass. Finally, May released my arm.
"Don't open 'til I say," she giggled.
I stood silently, sweat pricking at my brow and armpits. After what felt like an eternity, May called out again.
"Open!"
I blinked my eyes open and gave them a moment to adjust. In front of me, standing behind a table was Mom, Dad, May, Gerad, Lena Leger, and her kids; Celia Kamber, Beckner, Reed, Jemmy and Ivy. Only Aspen was missing.
Someone cleared their throat and I looked down. And there was Aspen. He was on one knee, holding a little silver band with birds carved into it. I screamed.
Tears began to flow down my cheeks and I covered my mouth with my hand to prevent my whimpers from escaping.
"America Singer," Aspen began. "I've been a fool. A fool in love. I care about you so much, and letting you go was one of the hardest thing I've ever done. I regretted it instantly, but didn't know how to make it right."
"Now, I know what to do. I know that I have to promise you to be yours for the rest of our lives. To work beside you. To care for you. And hopefully, raise children with you. You're my past, my present, and my future. I wake up thinking of you and go to sleep with your face in my mind. So, America Singer… will you marry me?"
I had no words. This was everything I've dreamt of and more. So I just nodded my head frantically, letting my tears drip onto the grass. Aspen slipped the ring onto my finger and pulled me up, pressing a firm kiss to my lips. I kissed back vigorously.
Cheers from our families jolted us back to reality. Dad was smiling at me, Mom and May were crying, and Gerad was grinning. Lena was holding tightly to Celia and Kamber.
When I finally caught my breath, I smiled at Aspen.
"Took you long enough!"
Aspen and I were officially married six months later. And a month after that, we had moved into our new house.
It was our final day of unpacking, and Mom and May had come over to help, since Aspen was working. I had spent most of the morning feeling ill, leaving May to do most of the unpacking while Mom looked after me.
Lena showed up in the afternoon with a loaf of freshly baked bread. But as we ate, a horrible twisting feeling filled my belly and I raced out of the room. I hunched over the toilet and vomited.
That was were Mom, Lena and May found me, crouched on the bathroom floor, white as a sheet.
"May, go make some herbal tea please," Lena said as Mom crouched down to rub my back.
"Honey, how long have you been feeling sick for?"
"A couple days," I whispered. A small part of me knew what it was, but I didn't want to believe it. I was scared.
But when I told Aspen I was pregnant, he erased my fears. And that was how Asa and Aria came into the world.
AN: Hey guys. I'm back with another SYOC. This time, based off of Kiera Cass's amazing Selection series. This is sort of an AU, where a random girl was chosen to the Selected from Carolina instead of America. She ended up marrying Aspen, and they had twins, Aria and Asa Leger.
Prince Maxon married Natalie Luca, and the Caste system stayed intact. Maxon and Natalie became King and Queen respectively and had two kids, Luca and Lorna.
Luca is now preparing to take the throne, and needs a bride. So, the next Selection is being held. You all are welcome to submit characters through any format, but only registered users can reserve Provinces. Everything will be listed on my profile (Finn16).
