"No!" I cry out lunging for her hand. I could feel its warmth – so close, but she spirals to the ground. Our eyes meet just before the crunch of concrete.

I hunch over wheezing. It echoes in my mind as rain pounds against the back of my neck, seeping down my shirt like warm bloo- STOP, there's nothi- NO, if I hadn't been dicking around with my powers today- oh, Kate. I'm so sorry.

"Max?" someone lightly nudges my back, "Max."

I turn to see David, "She-" I whimper falling to the ground. I could feel water soak through my jeans. I think I'm going to puke. David puts his hand on my shoulder.

"Max, you… did what-" The roof is quite filthy. Dead leaves and debris line the edges of the wall, a couple aluminum cans lie about; some kids probably threw them up there trying to one-up another. I jolt my collar away from his hand. Rising to my feet I glare at him, wishing my eyes could burn his blind. David dips his head making a stream of rain tinkle from the brim of his hat.

Little fucking late, I thought as the sirens approach the campus. Teachers were herding students away from the entrance. A few try to snap shots of Kate's body. I hope lightning smites them all. David escorts me through the crowd, following Principal Wells. He motions to Mr. Jefferson, who gently pats my shoulder before falling inline. That's when I saw her. Victoria. She lowers her phone as we approach. Nathen leans in and whispers something to her. He smirks as I near. David's grip tightens around my arm, keeping me at pace with the others. Just give me one swing at them. Nathan's smile grows and Victoria flinches away. You can't hide from this! I want to scream at her. "Nathan, you're with us." Wells calls.

"What? What did I-"

"Now, Nathan!" Nathan looks at me and scowls, try pinning this on me.

Watch me, I shoot back as David guides me along the trail.

Wells shifts through papers as I bury my face into my arms and listen to the rain rasp against the windows. "Max," Wells softly prods, I emerge watching his figure refract through the droplets in my eyes, "I'm sorry we have to do this right now." But you're going to anyway, so just say it. "I know you don't want to hear this, but thank you for- trying. You were there for her when no-"

"No, I wasn't," I croak, "no one was." Wells hands me another tissue from his pocket. I wipe my eyes and empty my nose.

"You were." He said forcing a smile. I wasn't and I sure as hell wasn't enough. Wells waves at the door. The police officer opens it letting Jefferson, Nathan and David into the room. Principal Wells gives them a moment to settle in before turning to the window. "I know this isn't pleasant for any of us…"
