When Dean finally admits that he's in love with Cas, Sam botches it all up.
"I'm in love with Cas," he says, so gravely he could be announcing the next doomsday. Sam recognizes Dean's expression as the serious look of suffering his brother wears when enduring a long-overdue discussion about feelings.
And Sam just. loses it.
Laughing is the last thing he should be doing, not at all the way he'd planned to react to this announcement when it finally came, but suddenly Sam's cracking up so hard he can barely breathe.
He doesn't know why it's instantly the most hilariously thing in the world. Dean had just sat Sam down like they had to Have A Talk and then said this as if he'd had a baffling epiphany when he might as well have been telling Sam that the sky was blue, that the ocean was wet, or that ACDC was the best thing since sliced bread.
When Sam first figured out Dean's feelings for the angel, he worried that he'd been the last to know. One of the first things Sam realized after his discovery was that Cas was also in love with Dean, and had known it for ages. Knowing this, Sam couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor bastard.
Since then, Sam made a mental tally of everyone they knew who had noted the now painfully obvious affection between the two. Jody knew, Claire knew, it was best not to comment on what Chuck knew, Meg teased about it eons back, even freaking Crowley knew. But looking at Dean's astonished face, Sam knew he'd been wrong. He hadn't been the last to know. Figures Dean would be the last one to figure out his own crush.
And, god help him, it's so much worse than he thought. Still laughing, as he catches Dean's eye he doesn't see the anger he'd expected, but instead a flash of genuine hurt, and Sam knows he's fucked up. He needs to calm down before Dean starts getting the idea in his head that this is a bad thing.
Sam makes an effort to control his breathing, and doesn't bother with an apology because he knows Dean can read it all over his face anyhow.
"Good!" Sam says firmly, placing a hand on Dean's shoulder, relieved when his brother visibly relaxes under his touch. Then, quieter, with a tenderness to his teasing smile Sam adds, "No duh."
A/N:
You know, I never write anything in order. Usually I have to think the whole plot through start to finish before ever writing anything down. But then I was in the middle of doing something else, I came up with this idea, and pulled out paper and wrote it all from start to finish in one go. So, I dunno what that means. This was based very loosely on something that I actually saw happen in real life :) Review pretty please!
