Disclaimer: I wish I didn't have to say this but it's as much mine as it is yours… unless you happen to work for the BBC in which case… slightly different outcome.

Summary: "Not if you're blonde!" What did the Doctor really think of Jack's outburst in 'Utopia'? An insight to the Doctor's thoughts. Possible spoilers for S1 but I think it's safe to say pretty much everyone's seen that. Hinted Rose/10.

A/N This scene just seemed wrong and I watched it one day thought of this story not much later; it's my explanation I guess. I suppose this can be left open for another chapter or two taking place over the course of 'Utopia' or the finale… so if you're really, really keen on it let me know and I'll see if I can write up another chapter. However this was only ever planned as a oneshot, so I think it will probably stay that way.

"Not if you're blonde!" Jack snorted, easily bouncing off Martha's energy, but as soon as he'd said it, he wished he could take it back. He could slap himself for being so thoughtless, in the midst of the jibbing conversation he just hadn't taken time to think before a sharp reply burst forth. Instantly he felt horrible. All these years waiting for the Doctor, he finally meets him again and what does he do, pour salt in his wounds. As much as he was angry about the Doctor leaving him behind, Jack knew it was low to target Rose. They had both loved her, if he was angry at the Doctor he should tell him, not insult a woman that they loved and lost. An apology was caught in his throat as Martha continued on, the moment for regrets passed and the Doctor wheeled around, coat flourishing, face glowering. Oh how he wished he hadn't said it.

The Doctor was surprised at the anger he felt towards Jack at his last remark. While he knew he hadn't truly meant it, somehow it still stung. A rush of memories bombarded him, Rose, Rose and Jack, Satellite 5, the Bad Wolf, Rose, Rose, Rose. It made his head swim and his insides burn; he wanted to lash out at Jack, cutting down everything he held dear with a handful of words. But he knew he had no right, no reason, he knew Jack just hadn't thought before spouting whatever came to mind. Same old Jack, thought the Doctor. Still, he couldn't help his anger; for all of the sights he shared with her, all of the miracles that made up Rose Tyler, everything she had done, for Jack to imply that she was just some blonde disappointed him.

"You two!" The Doctor snapped as he turned to face the pair that were perilously close to endangering their TARDIS key privileges. But as he looked Jack in the eye he could see the apology he hadn't had time to voice yet. They were on the same wavelength as they silently acknowledged their understanding of each other. It calmed the Doctor slightly, to know that this old friend hadn't meant any hard feelings in the comment; it was just another Jack comment that was spoken before it was considered, though he couldn't keep the anger out of his voice. He wanted them to know that that particular topic was strictly off limits, no matter how many privileges they earned the right to.

"We're at the end of the universe!" He cried, trying to take his mind off his memories, to remind him of the scale of things. "Right at the edge of knowledge itself," He carried on, still aggravated at how easily Jack's comment had got under his skin. "And you're busy… blogging!" The last word was spat out, their casualness disgusting him. Fixing them with one last glare, to let them know what this was really about, he spun around again, coat tails trailing behind.

As long as he was alive, he would make sure Rose Tyler got the respect she deserved. Especially from two men that owed their lives to her.
