Her sister wanted nothing more than to erase her completely from her life. James Potter didn't want her anymore and had moved onto better, prettier, easier girls. Her friendship with Severus was ruined.
Lily shook those thoughts from her mind, and turned back to her book. From the corner of her eye, she saw James flirting with some girl. Hestia Jones, she thought. Hestia seemed to be resisting his efforts-she always knew Jones was decent-but James kept on flirting.
Why didn't James want her anymore? He never seemed to care about her turning him down before. He had always come back for her. Was she not good enough? Was she too demanding? She knew she wasn't all that pretty, but still.
Frustrated with herself, Lily jumped up, and headed out of the Gryffindor common room. She didn't see James Potter excuse himself and leave Hestia Jones' side to follow her. Turning the corner, she bumped into somebody.
"Oops! Sorry...oh, hi, Severus." She gave him back the books she had picked up from the ground, and walked away. He grabbed her wrist.
"Lily, please. Just one more chance."
"I gave you a chance. No other Gryffindors are nice to Slytherins. But I was, and look where that got me. I'm just a Mudblood, remember, Sev?" Unconsciously, she had slipped back into calling him by his nickname.
"Lily, I'm sorry. It just slipped out."
"You call everybody else Mudbloods. Why should I be any different?"
"Lily, I'm really sorry. Just one more chance, I swear."
"No. I told you this already. I've chosen my path and you've chosen yours." Lily turned away, and headed up to the Owlery. Maybe she could relax there. She always loved owls. The way they differed so much, but they were so much the same. Muggles didn't get to see them all that often, and Lily thought it just one of the other perks of being a witch. But she didn't find solace there, either.
Her owl,Lilac, had just flown in from delivering a message to her parents.
-Freak
You've finally done it. Gone and ruined our lives. Thanks a lot, Lily. Being normal just wasn't good enough for you, was it. And now our parents are dead. Don't ever speak to me again, freak. I'm taking the house, and the rest of my possessions. Mum and Dad, for whatever reason, left you their stuff. Goodbye and good riddance.
-Petunia
Mum and Dad were dead? Lily stood there in shock. Suddenly, a bubble of emotions rose to the surface, and she ran out of the Owlery, still clutching the letter, and ran all the way up the stairs to the sixth floor, where she ran into the Room of Requirement, and collapsed, crying.
Sobs racked her body, as she went over what could possibly have made her life so miserable.
Fifteen minutes passed, and finally James thought that enough was enough. He walked in.
"Lily?"
"Go away, Potter."
"No. You're upset."
"Why do you care? You don't even like me anymore." She was still hyperventilating, and every so often, a sob would hit.
"I don't like you anymore, yes. But that's only because I love you."
"No, you don't. You're just saying that to make me feel better."
"No, I'm not. I really do love you, Lily."
Lily looked up, shakily.
"You're not just saying that to make me feel better?"
"No."
"Alright."
And so the two of them sat, Lily leaning into James, and James' arms wrapped around her. And at that moment, it really didn't matter what Petunia thought about her, or why Severus had left her. She was happy
