"MEGAMIND!" Roxanne's voice rang out across the empty battlefield. There was blood everywhere, mangled brainbots, a massacred army of robots, Minion watching from a pond nearby, an oozing wound on his side, and somewhere a dead villain, one Megamind had defeated after his most trying battle yet.

But where was Megamind?

Roxanne's head whipped from side to side. There! A movement, a flash of blue! Roxanne ran straight for it, skidding to a halt and throwing herself down on her knees.

"Megamind!" she cried, trying to lift a large piece of a building off of Megamind's body, but it was too heavy. "Are you alright?" she asked worriedly, giving up, hoping against all hope that the dark red blood coating his chest wasn't his own.

"Well, I don't think dying can be classified as 'all right,' but other than that I'm fine," he said weakly as Roxanne lifted his head from the rubble, his eyes opening blearily.

"Don't say that!" she commanded, aghast. "You aren't going to die, Megamind; I forbid it!" Megamind smiled and gave a gurgling laugh as blood rose into his mouth.

"Don't worry Roxie. You and Minion will be fine without me—safer, even."

"You're not dying!" Roxanne insisted, her jaw quivering and tears beginning to well in her eyes. "We'll get you to the hospital and—"

"Don't," Megamind ordered, catching her hand as she got up to find a phone. "Stay with me?" Roxanne looked down at Megamind, mouth slightly parted, refusing to accept that he was dying. But she didn't leave. She sat down with him and held his hand, part of her hoping he would fall unconscious so she could call an ambulance.

"Roxanne, you know I love you, right?"

"Of course, Megamind," she whispered, fighting back the tears that threatened to overtake her. "I love you, too."

"I was looking forward to being a Dad, too," he whispered, his hand straying to Roxanne's stomach, and she looked taken aback.

"How did you—"

"Minion told me," he said, surprised at how calmly he was taking everything. "I hope she—"

"Or he."

"—Or he, looks more like you than like me, Roxanne. It'll be hard explaining to him why he's blue."

"Don't talk like that!" she cried, covering her ears.

"Roxanne!" Megamind whispered forcefully. "It doesn't do any good trying to convince yourself, because I already know. I want you to move into the lair permanently. Minion will keep you safe, and the brainbots make excellent guard dogs—"

"Don't say things like that!" Roxanne insisted. Her heart felt like it was being fed through a mangle. "You're going to be fine, I know you will!"

"And Roxanne?" Megamind asked, as if she hadn't spoken.

"Yeah?" Her voice was hoarse.

"If it's a boy, don't name him after me, OK?" Roxanne managed a small and unconvincing smile.

"No promises," she whispered back, and Megamind smiled, too. Then his eyes slid shut (he absolutely refused to die with his eyes open) and he whispered,

"Goodnight, Roxanne."

"Goodnight, Megamind," she returned, her voice breaking and the tears starting to flow. But Megamind still never saw her cry. He was already gone.

I finally did it. I killed him. For real. Luckily, it's just a one-shot, so it doesn't continue. :) I'm so evil. :D
