"Skulduggery!" Valkyrie screamed, sprinting towards him. He looked up and reached out to her, but it was too late.
He disappeared through the gateway.
"Keep it open!" Valkyrie screamed to Fletcher.
"I can't!"
She was three steps away when the portal collapsed.
**
"Open it!" She yelled.
But Fletcher was standing, and through the swirling smoke she could see his stunned face. He shook his head.
Everything in bold is pg. 387/388 of The Faceless Ones by Derek Landy. I own naught.
I could hear Valkyrie scream my name. Sweet of her, but why? I looked behind myself – straight into the looming mouth of the portal. I turned as quickly as I could, and reached out, hoping to catch her arm, but I was too late.
The world took a deep breath in, and universal fairness took a coffee break.
I fell into the portal.
Funny, Valkyrie was still yelling. Well, a more appropriate term would be 'Funny, I could still hear Valkyrie screaming.' Aren't I in a different world, now? I opened my eyelids… or rather, I turned my vision back on. (AN … its hard to find the right words and tenses to use, with Skulduggery.)
"Oh look, I survived. Again. Sometimes I wonder why the bad guys bother." He waited for someone to groan and come up with a witty reply, or even acknowledge him at all. But no-one noticed him at all. Valkyrie was yelling at Fletcher, who was shaking his head.
"I don't have the Grotesquery," he said "I can't."
Valkyrie ran to China and shook her, saying "Do something!"
China didn't even look at her, just kept staring at where the portal had been. Valkyrie pushed her away and turned on Ghastly
"Come on!"
"He's gone."
What? I'm right here…?
I looked down at myself, not at all prepared for the shock of finding my body more transparent then Echo-Gordon's shadow.
