Prologue
A faint breeze ruffled the smooth green grass. In the distance was the faint thudding of the horses hooves. Three cats lay in the grass--a smoky black tom, a heavily pregnant creamy white she-cat, and another she cat with a white pelt and black splotches. They stirred, one by one.
"Your kits! Where have they gone?" exclaimed the cream colored she-cat.
"It's the flat-faces." Mewed the black and white she-cat. Her voice was filled with sadness. "They took them. They do it all the time. "But Floss…" the creamy she-cat's voice was filled with shock. Floss shook her head and sighed.
The black tom flexed his claws and bared his teeth. "Wait until I get my paws on those flat-faces…"
Floss sighed again. "There's nothing we can do, Smoky. Smokey growled. "So we're just going to let that crow-food eater steal our kits?"
"They're not crow-food eaters," Floss pointed out mildly. "They're pretty nice, and they feed us." Smokey's fur laid flat again. Suddenly the cream colored she-cat let out a moan. Floss turned anxiously to her. "Are you okay, Daisy?" Daisy moaned again. "My stomach hurts."
"She's having her kits!" Suddenly, a small bundle fell out. Floss nipped opened the sack that was covering it and gave it to Smoky. Smoky started licking it's fur the wrong way to get it dry. Daisy let out a muffled yowl. "Another one's coming!" Floss announced. A cream colored bundle fell out. Floss nipped opened the sack and started licking it while keeping one eye on Daisy. Daisy let out a low moan as another bundle fell out. "I think that's the last one." She pulled the kit toward her and gave Daisy the kit she was licking and started working on the new kit. "Two males and a female." Daisy mewed softly. "They're perfect. I'll name this one Mouse," her tail flicked her tail toward a brown and white tom. "This one will be Berry," She waved her tail at a cream colored tom. " And this one will be Hazel." She pointed to a light brown she-cat.
Suddenly she sat up. "I have to go." Floss was surprised by the ferocity in her voice. "What do you mean, you have to go?" Daisy replied, softer this time, "I'm not going to let the flat-faces take my kits."
" But where will you go?" asked Floss. "The woods." Daisy replied. "I'm going to join the cats we saw the other day. They looked pretty nice." Added Daisy as they looked at her in disbelief. "I'm going." Daisy replied firmly. Floss rubbed her nose against her ear tip while Smoky twined his tail with hers. "I understand." Mewed Smoky. "I'll miss you." Added Floss. "I'll visit you often." Daisy promised both of them. She picked up her three kits and headed toward the forest. "Good luck! Floss called. Daisy waved her tail in farewell as she disappeared into the trees.
