This is part of a story that I might write one day. I am just putting it out on the web to see the reaction it receives.
Nothing of Star Trek belongs to me.
"Please," Devna shifted so close to the screen, Kai could see dark green freckles across her face. "Let me join Starfleet. I want to help and be out there with you. Please Kai!" His little sister begged half way across the galaxy.
Kai could feel a headache forming in the front of his skull. He pinched the skin between his eyes and sighed.
"Dev, you're 15 years old. I don't… I can't …. You know what? We can talk about this later. I have a shift in 5." Kai squashed down his guilt when he saw his little sister lean away and quickly wipe at her eyes.
"I love you Dev." The older Orion said, trying to muster up a smile. "I'll see you soon and we can talk about this. Properly."
"I love you too Kai." Denva said sniffling just a little.
As he ended the transmission, he let out a sigh that vibrated throughout his entire body. His little sister in Starfleet? No, Devna was safe on Earth, she didn't need to be part of this. Never having a stable home and always counting down the minutes to leave to see your loved ones?
Devna didn't deserve that.
She didn't need that.
Kai had sacrificed so much to keep his little sister safe, no matter what.
Starfleet wouldn't keep Devna safe.
And with that, Kai rose and swigged down a gulp of coffee.
He had a job to do.
When the transmission ended, Devna punched the screen.
She panted, watching the blood spread across her arm. Devna could feel Sarek materialize at the doorway.
"Do you require medical assistance? A medical transport has an approximate arrival time of 2.3 minutes." The Vulcan asked from a distance. He did not stride across the room and cradle her injured arm and sing to make the pain go away like her brother would have done.
Her brother wasn't there.
Devna let out a scoff that sounded suspiciously like a sob. "I do not require professional medical assistance Sarek." She stood up, ignoring bright flash of pin that suddenly stabbed her arm. "I can take care of myself."
Sarek remained quiet and allowed her to pass.
She practically ran through the house and slammed the door on her way out. Ignoring the strange looks she received, the green girl kept on walking.
It was until she was a mile away from her foster home that she realized that she had glass shards embedded in her still clenched fist and tears on her cheeks.
