Chapter 1: Running away

A/N: Ok then this is the edited hopefully new and improved version of Who am I :)

Disclaimer: I do NOT own Vampire knight only the OC's in my story.

"Katarina stop being so bloody unsociable and rude, come the hell down stairs to see your father and sisters or else I'll take away your memoir" my mother hissed up the attic/studio stairs.

"Step- father and step-sisters" I corrected her before adding "mother their not my real family and never will be." I placed the large book otherwise known as my memoir on the antique coffee table, standing up I straightened out the crumples in my disgusting salmon pink chiffon dress which clashed horrendously with my vibrant cherry red hair. 'Eww, is the only word that comes to mind… ugh Alex and Millie are going to have a field day with this'

As I took the short flight of stairs to where my mother stood, her fuchsia pink dress glaring at me. She tutted as I jumped the last steps of the stairs, her tongue making angry, inpatient noises.

"What are those?" she swallowed with difficulty; I stared at her blankly for a second then realising she was referring to my choice of shoes.

"What's wrong with Converse?" I asked bored cocking my head to on side.

"Wear these" she hissed angrily, producing a pair of ugly pink sandals from behind her.

"Ah hell no! I'd rather drown in ogre puke" I retorted sticking my nose up in the air.

"May I remind you that this is a formal tea party with my prospective husband, that your grandmother will be attending" my mother growled under her breath.

"So?"

"Be polite and wear the stupid shoes" she almost screamed just managing to keep her short temper in check. Throwing the shoes down on the floor she huffed off back downstairs to the main drawing room.

"Fine anything for a more peaceful life" I screeched after her, kicking the converse off so they both flew in the directions of valuable antiques narrowly missing their targets. I shoved my feet into the ugly sandals and stomped down the stairs.

I was busy muttering to my-self about stupid mothers, ugly step-sisters and useless step-fathers when I felt the ice cold breeze waft over my bear shoulders, when I felt fingers drift over the top of my spine I swung round expecting to see something like a murderous ghost covered with blood and wielding a double headed axe. But nothing and nobody, 'I really must be going crazy' I thought shaking off the feeling and running to the drawing room.

As I opened the double doors to the drawing room, I took in some fresh air 'let me tell you now that's not easy in a century's old country house in the middle of Somerset, it's full of dust'. I swung the doors open and put on my best fake smile.

"Darling" I heard my Grandmother call my name from her seat by the already crackling Georgian fireplace beside her. "Come here Kat, I want to get a closer look at you" she adjusted her glasses on her wrinkly nose "you've grown in beauty as well as charisma"

"Granny don't flatter me so much" I giggled slightly taking a seat beside her and giving her a brief hug and kiss on the cheek "but might I just say how wonderfully youthful you look"

"Now look who's flattering" she laughed the sound echoing in the old room. We talked for a while before we were interrupted by a small shy voice.

"Mrs Rodda would you like white chocolate and raspberry muffin, they're very nice" I looked up to see Emily Dewhurst holding a plate of muffins. Emily Dewhurst was the younger sibling of Alexia and Millicent Dewhurst a kind and selfless young girl who was constantly bullied by her older siblings making her very shy and scared of meeting new people.

"Of course I'd love one Emily darling" my grandmother picked one off the plate and took great delight in unwrapping and savouring her first bite. "I tell you what would go fantastically well with this darling, a nice cup of tea."

"I'll go get that, and Emily can sit in my seat" I offered, standing up, pushing a nervous Emily down into my seat.

"That'd be angel darling"

"I'll be right back"

I caught the eye of my younger sister from across the room as she sat in the corner sulking. She grim-faced at me, she really hated events such as these. I beckoned for her to join me at the table laden with used tea cups and plates of savoury or sweet dishes.

"What's with all the used tea cups?" I muttered as she got close enough to hear.

"Grandfather was showing some business partners around, I think he just waved them off" Keely tossed her ginger hair over her shoulder and groaned in frustration.

"I want to leave this stuffy room and get away from it all" she said running her fingers through the wire like nest known as her hair.

"Wouldn't we all" I sighed as I plopped two sugar cubes into the tea and stirred gently.

"Looks like mother is having a right old hoot with Mr Derek Dewhurst… ugh he's such a gold digging knob head, he makes me want to throw up all over his £3000 haircut" she grumbled as we looked over at mother who punched the said man's arm playfully and then continued to feel his 'real' biceps.

"He's such a wanker" we said simultaneously pulling faces at one another.

"Don't look now but here come Dumb and Dumber" Keely whispered out the corner of her mouth.

"Kill me now" I groaned stirring the tea a bit too roughly so it sloshed a great deal over the sides.

"I wouldn't give my-self the pleasure" she murmured shoving a mini quiche in her mouth.

"Alexia, Millicent darlings" we greeted them. Smiling politely, I was aware that Keely still had crumbs plastered round the corners of her mouth.

"Well, well fancy seeing you two here" Alex was the first to speak air kissing us making sure not to touch our 'filthy' skin.

"Well we do live here" Keely faked a surprised look.

"What you two living here no way, this is a place for aristocracy you're just both commoners" Millie laughed snobbishly her nostrils flaring wildly.

"That's most unattractive Millicent; please refrain from making an even larger fool of yourself" I spoke politely, kicking my sister in the shin as she was about to let off a long string of not so innocent words.

"Says Tweedle Ugly and Tweedle Uglier" Millicent laughed again her nostrils flaring.

"Now, now sister we mustn't be so unkind to our poor step-sister's, I mean look at what Katarina is wearing that's got to be the ugliest dress in all of history"

We stood there listening to their petty insults which fell on deaf ears, we'd become accustomed to repelling their insults ever since we'd met at that stupid place where people watch horses race and wear stupidly large hats.

But I guess I do feel almost sorry for them they haven't had the easiest upbringing, losing your mother must be a horrendous thing to go through.

Alexia and Millicent Dewhurst were the daughters of a failed musician who later went into banking and met and married a wealthy aristocrat woman, a few years ago she sadly passed away from complications after the birth of their third child Emily Dewhurst. Because the girls had no mother they relied solely on servants who spoilt them and that eventually led to the spoilt self-centred brats they are now.

I actually pitied them that they had no one to ever talk to, no one to help them when they really needed it or someone that truly understood them.

We sat outside on the front step looking out on the gardens, despite it being early January the gardens were in mild bloom many green shrubs sprouting here and there erupting with pastel yellow coloured flowers the fountain nearby showering the pond full of large Koi fish with water droplets.

"Katarina do you ever feel like we don't belong here, like this isn't are real family?" my sister said after a long silence.

"No" I looked at her, she looked sad and tired and worn out but the worst thing was that she looked empty.

"Well I do" standing up she walked down the steps her ginger hair flying behind her like dancing flames.

I said nothing and waited for her to continue.

"The way we get treated by our main family is like we're higher them it's like we're royalty or something to them" her back was to me so I couldn't see her face, but I could tell she was sad.

"It's because they love us so much-"

"No it isn't" she cut me off, spinning round there were tears streaming down her face.

"Can't you see?" she stood up to her full height looking me directly in the eyes "Look at us we look nothing like them, our hair colours, and our eye colours. We are not genetically related to them we're completely different" by now there were floods of tears coming down her cheeks.

"They're not our family and never have been only we are-"

"What are you saying?"

"I'm… saying… I don't know… who I am" she managed to choke out between sobs.

"We must be genetically related to them, there are even pictures of us after our birth with mother holding us in Greater London hospital" I said desperately.

"There fake; I researched into it there are no records of either of us being born in that hospital or any hospital in a 100 mile radius, why would they lie to us about something like this" she spoke wiping any tears away from her eyes.

I had no answer to her questions but what she was saying sounded scarily true, it did make an awful lot of sense now, their behaviour around us was weird, even grandmother was fake often.

"I don't even think we're human… look at this" she held out her palm and closed her eyes, I watched as a small golden flame was ignited on her palm and that when she opened her eyes they'd gone from their normal dull green colour to vibrant emerald green.

I gasped as she closed her hand extinguishing the flame.

"No stop you'll burn yourself" I yelled covering my mouth.

"No I won't it never hurts, never leaves a mark only the faint tingling sensation that ensures it truly belongs with me" she knelt down to my height where I sat on the cold slab of stone in shock.

"Katarina look into my eyes" I obediently looked into them as she held my face in place with her pale freckly hands "Sometimes when you see blood you get an urge to drink it like you're thirsty?"

'How could she know my darkest secret?'

"It's just a phase, I'll grow out of it" I breathed deeply, suppressing it like I'd done for so long.

"No you won't because even now it's getting stronger the urge to drink, like never ending dehydration" she looked even deeper into my eyes like she was peering into my soul.

"Be quiet" I tried to get up, but her force on my shoulders was to strong keeping me down.

"Even now you're eyes are changing, Grandmother doesn't say you're getting more beautiful for no reason you know. She means it. We're waking up… whatever we are" she let go of me and turned her back, so that she was facing the house.

"Another thing I must tell you, there's something coming in the darkness an old foe, a new threat and an old friend, and all of them seem to converge on you sister and two others" she spoke with an air security like she was so sure of her-self.

"Keely that's enough, please go upstairs and clean your-self up" I peered round my sister where my supposed grandmother stood her walking stick no longer in hand.

"Of course, goodbye for now sister" were her words as she walked swiftly through the large hysteria oak doors.

"Sister!" I tried calling for her but she wouldn't turn round.

"Please come with me" my grandmother bowed as I shakily walked past her I had no idea what was going on. I was directed to the drawing room which was now empty and dimly lit with a cold ghostly draft wafting through, like earlier on the stairs.

"Please tell me what is going on?" I breathed shakily, I was thoroughly distressed. My grandmother, grandfather and mother stood before me in a line.

I watched shocked as they morphed before my eyes into short squat like creatures with long ears and snouts and chubby cheeks and grubby skin.

"W-what a-a-are y-you?" I asked my voice trembling "I think I'm going to faint" I said after a second.

"We are the First Troll Battalion of the Royal Knights, we live to serve the royal family of Ties and bring honour to their sacred names and abilities, your royal majesty Tyler Katarina Remorva Hysteria Rodda princess of Ties" they spoke in perfect time with one another never missing a beat.

"Who's she?" I asked dumbly

"You" Troll/Grandmother answered her voice gruff.

"Milady you must run to the woods it will offer protection" Troll/Mother ushered me to the door passing me a small dagger like object "make sure not to lose this" she pressed the dagger into my hand.

"Why must I run?" I asked desperately, placing the object in my hands into a pocket on the dress.

"Keep running, we'll try to hold them off for as long as possible" they pushed me through the back door and firmly shut and locked it behind them.

"Wait for your old friend; he's coming for you… Kaname Kuran is coming for you" their voices said through the door before disappearing

"Hey!" I smashed my fist up against the door, trying to get back into my home.

Scccccreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeccccccch

I heard an ear piercing screech from the front of the house that no human or animal could make, deciding it was time to run I ran full pelt towards the forest, never stopping to breath my arms moving in fluid motions. I've always been a fast runner, in class I could out run all the girls and most of the boys in distance and sprint. The only thing that did make running difficult was the sandals which I stumbled and slipped as the soles got sweaty as I ran.

I ran harder and faster when I heard cackles behind me, I was almost at the edge of the forest, just a few more meters and I'd be in the woods. Checking behind me only once, I caught sight of human like things in figure chasing after me, getting closer and closer until they were only a couple hundred yards away from me.

By now I was on the edge of the woods jumping over logs and fallen trees, weaving in and out of the untouched trunks, limping from the scratches on my legs that oozed fresh blood from when I'd scraped it along a jagged rock.

I stopped when the trees around me were silent except for the odd rustling of branches which I hoped was just the wind, by now it was growing steadily darker and the night was drawing in bringing the day to a close. I must be miles away from home I'm in the heart of the woods and I daren't go back not with those things around. 'What were they anyway?" I asked my-self.

"I can smell you" I jumped at the voice that was as cold as ice, backing up against a large oak tree to give my-self cover and protection.

I tried to keep my breathing quiet and steady and peer through the hazy darkness.

"No point little girlie, I can smell your blood, so rich in taste and so thick… like the blood of a Kuran… well that's what they said but I'd love to find out for my-self… MIND IF I TASTE YOUR BLOOD!" it cackled manically before all the trees in front of me went crazy their branches smashing against one another as though somebody was moving around them fast. I didn't know which way to turn.

THUD

I stood frozen as the vibrations of a body hitting the trunk of the tree came through the wood. My heart beat erratically as I slowly bent my neck upwards, my body frozen to the trunk like a statue. I was met with two luminous blood red eyes.

"Meal time" the thing chimed, before grabbing my face and bending it harshly to the side leaving my neck exposed.

"This may hurt bit"

I screamed when two sharp objects ripped into my neck spilling my blood down the pink dress, I could feel it splurging forth a warm unpleasant feeling as it soaked one side of my body and trailed down my legs.

"Let- m-" I couldn't even talk as blood would spill from my mouth, the things head still buried in my neck drinking mercilessly… drinking…

.Vampire….

Was the one word that found its way into my head as consciousness slipped away and my body crumpled to the bottom of the tree trunk on to the soft cool leafy ground.

'Kaname… save me'

A/N: Currently I'm re-writing all the chapters to make things more understandable and correct mistakes, not only that but I have to revise a great deal for my mock exams in January which mean a lot to me. So don't expect too much up dating to be done before the New Year… and ideally I would love to finish my story of Kaze no stigma by Christmas and start my new one Hidden by Christmas, which my best friend VioletDream13 has been begging me to start. So hang in there. :) and if I don't see you by Christmas have a merry one and I wish you happiness.

Please read through tell me what you think.
