Hand in Hand

Two lovers lay hand in hand on the warm pavement, the yellow painted line the only thing between them. Bright colours illuminated the sky as the sun slowly sank beneath the trees. The air was beginning to cool to a much more bearable temperature, a light breeze causing the tree tops to sway slightly. Birds sat atop the hydro wires chirping back and forth as they welcomed dusk. Tears ran idly down her cheeks a taste of salt touching her lips as she cried silently. He turned his head to look at her before reaching his outer hand across to wipe them from her cheeks.

``Please don`t cry,`` he whispered barely audible above the noisy birds. She turned her head to look at him as well but remained silent, the tears still running freely. Crickets began to chirp and a car horn sounded off in the distance. ``I will be back before you know it,`` he tried to explain even though he knew it would do nothing to soothe her pain.

``Why do you have to go? Why can`t you stay here with me?`` she questioned her sobs slowly growing louder as she thought about life without him. She couldn't imagine going to work at the BAU everyday to see his empty office. They finally had the relationship she had always wanted and now it felt like everything was being ripped away.

``I`m an Agent and duty calls. They need me there, you know that." She nodded her head in understanding.

``It's such a dangerous mission though. Can't Strauss find someone else?" He pondered that thought for a moment. Even though there were plenty of other eligible agents that could be sent, he knew Strauss wouldn't change her mind. He knew all too well why she had chosen him over everyone else. Erin Strauss simply did not condone the relationship between two of her agents and would apparently go to great lengths to stop it. "What if you die?`` she asked finally expressing her biggest fear. ``I will be all alone, I don`t want to be without you.`` He shrugged his shoulders, knowing he would forever regret leaving her all alone. "I understand why you have to go," she continued, "but it still hurts you know.`` He sighed, he knew leaving her would be hard, but it would make coming back all that much better .

``I know.``

She wiped her sleeve across her watering eyes. ``We should get going before it gets dark,`` she said as she began to stand up. He grasped her hand tighter as he murmured softly, ``just a little longer.``

``What if a car comes,`` she wondered aloud knowing that it would now be hard to spot their two bodies in the quickly fading light.

``Then we will die together.``

She smiled.
