Star Gazing
–––
She stares into the dark night sky. "You know, in the future, we will, too, be able to go into space. Not just astronauts."
He lies next to her on the grass. "Yeah, we'll have big ships the size of cities to take us there. It will be so quick we won't even notice it. We won't even age."
A shiny firefly swirls above them, resembling the stars they're watching.
He thinks about it further. He adds, "And we'll have real Space Camps then, not the phony ones we have here now."
She smiles at the idea. "Who knows? Maybe we will have an Alien best friend there?"
He smirks to himself. "I hope she'll be hot."
She turns her head to him with disgust. "Don't be an idiot. Aliens are unisex."
He looks back at her. "How would you know? Ever met one?"
She doesn't think before she answers. The words shoot away. "Yeah, names Oliver Oken."
He pokes his tongue at her childishly. "Joke's on you. I'm a boy."
She rolls her eyes. "Funny. If it looks like a girl, screams like a girl and has a name of a boy, then it must be unisex."
He cringes. "Ouch. Burn."
A croak of a frog lets them know it hides somewhere on a nearby tree.
He says, "You know all the cool rich kids will be able to go."
She agrees. "Yeah, so that leaves us out, huh? I bet Miley will be able to go. She's super rich thanks to Hannah. People will be really snobby by then."
He laughs. "They'd be like 'Whoa! You've never been to space? I've been there like... three times. What a loser.'"
She snorts out a laugh in return. "Amber and Ashley will probably be on the first ship out."
He rolls his eyes. "I hope they will stay there."
She laughs harder, then clams down and grabs his hand. "Oliver."
He looks at her again, a much softer look in his eyes this time. "Yeah?"
She looks at him with sympathy. "We are going to be the last two losers to stay on Earth."
He returns the look. "Yeah."
She looks back into the sky. "If you could ever go, where would you visit?"
He does the same. "I don't know. Space is a big place."
She smiles dreamily and closes her eyes for a brief of a second as she thinks. "I want to see the Milky Way."
He tries to imagine it, too. "That sounds nice."
Her eyes go moist. She reaches over and wipes them dry. "Oliver?"
He answers with an "Hmm?"
She sobs lightly. She doesn't know why. "If you ever win the lottery and be super rich, would you take me to space with you?"
He sits up and pulls her to him into a hug. "I wouldn't choose anyone else."
Fin.
