A/N Hello readers welcome to my breath of the wild story.

I had originally named this story 'Revenge of the fallen' however I was unsure where to take it and honestly there was little interest. So I've decided to come up with a new story and plot.

This story will be set post Ganon and will follow on from the secret ending. Therefore this will contain spoilers pertaining to breath of the wild and also the champions ballad so read at your own discretion

Now there will be some Zelink in later chapters so for those who do not like this ship then this probably isn't for you.

As I have played through the game twice and am currently playing through master mode and of course the champions ballad I'm hoping to keep most things as accurate as possible, but for obvious reasons I will be including some of my own material and ideas.

Also there will be darker content in upcoming chapters, but I will put warnings of any particular graphic content at the beginning of each chapter.

My motivation to write depends on whether people like the story so I'd really appreciate reviews to let me know if it's worth continuing..

Chapter One

Lanayru Wetlands.

Link and Zelda rode in silence, each lost in their own thoughts, their own concerns. It had been three days since they had set out for Zora's domain and both were just thankful that the journey so far had been relatively uneventful. The Princess had silently recited a prayer each night thanking the Goddess that the weather had been in their favor and they had not encountered any significant obstacles.

As they approached the border to the Trilby valley, Zelda slowed her royal white stallion, bringing him to a halt. Her emerald green eyes swept the landscape, then flicked downwards in order to study the Sheikah slate. Link and his ever faithful mare, Epona stopped alongside.

"If we maintain our current pace I anticipate we should reach Inogo bridge in as little as two days," the Hylian Princess explained. "Then we'll just need to follow the Zora river all the way to Zora's domain."

"That's...that's excellent news," Link said. "I'm most looking forward to seeing King Dorephan, Prince Sidon and all my friends there again. It's certainly been a while."

Zelda smiled. "Then let us make haste."

As they continued their journey along the narrow winding paths, Link noticed the sky darkening, black clouds rapidly rolled in and the serious threat of a thunderstorm loomed on the horizon. No sooner had they passed the Tah Muhl shrine, the champion felt a few droplets of rain. They were light enough at first, but before long had turned increasingly heavy, seeping through their clothes and impeding their movement.

Link immediately turned to the Princess. "Looks like we're going to need to seek shelter."

Zelda agreed. "Do you have somewhere in mind?"

Scanning their rather barren surroundings, Link had to think fast. Foothill stable was at least a half days journey from their current location, however there was somewhere else he recalled from his travels. He wasn't sure his companion would approve, regrettably though with the weather worsening by the minute they seemingly didn't have a choice. "I think so, Princess, follow me."

As they carefully navigated the path, the rain had turned into a torrential downpour and several times their horses came close to losing their footing on the muddy trail. Zelda gripped the reins with sweaty palms urging her stallion to take it as slow as possible.

"Hang on in there, Princess," Link shouted above the roaring noise, "it's just a little farther."

Zelda nodded as she followed him down a steep, rocky incline to a large skull structure, now abandoned, but ominous all the same. Oh my, is this what I think it is?

"Ta-da!" Link chuckled, giving her a crooked grin.

"Wait, what?" Zelda asked. Realization dawned on her that her knight really was intending for them to take shelter in a bokoblin hideout. "Oh no, no, no, no! You can't be serious!"

"Do you see any alternatives?" Link quizzed, exasperated.

Grimacing, the Princess walked past him, wrinkling her nose at the vile stench emanating from inside. "I guess not," she replied softly.

Link barreled inside and proceeded to unload his gear. "I know this is not exactly what your accustomed to. It's certainly no palace. There's no soft feather bed, and it smells pretty rotten. But the main thing is that it's dry and it'll be toasty too once I get us a fire going. Overall a pretty wise choice if you ask me."

Zelda stood brooding in silent contemplation. Although it was difficult for her to admit, this place wasn't all that bad. She'd certainly had better, but she'd also had worse too. Memories suddenly resurfaced of an entire century trapped in the castle alone with Ganon. Blinking back tears threatening to slip out, she pushed those unwanted thoughts aside.

Using some wood, flint and a little help from the master sword, Link managed to spark a small fire. Averting his gaze from the crackling flames he noticed Zelda standing there, shivering. "If you're reluctant about sitting down, I could always provide you with some korok leaves from my inventory. I know it's not much in the way of comfort, but it sure beats sitting on the dirty floor."

Mindful of the piles of glistening white bones which littered the cave, Zelda found the perfect spot and sank to her knees. "I appreciate the offer, Link, but I'm fine, really."

Link scoffed. "Whatever you say, Princess. Just don't ever say I lack civility."

"I wouldn't dream of it. As a matter of fact I find your actions very courteous and chivalrous, Sir Link. However I'm more then capable of surviving a few nights out here in the wild."

"Well in that case, Your Highness...or is it Your Majesty now?" Link assumed that since her father, the late King Rhoam had sadly perished and Zelda was the last remaining heir, she naturally would ascend to the throne and become Hyrule's new Queen.

Zelda lowered her head, contemplating her new title. "I...I suppose it would be. Only right now I'm not sure the people would accept me as their Princess let alone their Queen." It was true she couldn't escape her heritage, however that didn't mean she had to fully embrace her birthright - at least not yet.

"I think I prefer Zelda for now. All that formality and grandeur, well... it just doesn't seem right."

Crouching down, Link gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "We'll make Hyrule great again, Zelda. We'll rebuild this kingdom from the ground up and then, when you feel the time is right you can claim what is rightfully yours."

Zelda nodded, her face beaming. "I think I like the sound of that."

The Great Deku tree had been right. She did have a smile like the sun and although he longed to stare at that face all day long, his stomach was beginning to rumble loudly. "I'm hungry, are you hungry? I didn't notice a cooking pot outside so unfortunately you're not going to be able to experience any of my exquisite meals. However, I do have an abundance of various fruits, including apples, bananas and wild berries. Just let me know if anything takes your fancy."

Unlatching the Sheikah slate from her hip, Zelda peered down at the screen. "I can't say I'm particularly hungry."

Link scooted beside her, munching on a red, juicy apple. "Not that hungry? You've hardly eaten since your return. Shouldn't you be famished?"

"I haven't needed to consume food for over one hundred years," Zelda declared.

I guess that's one way to diet. "Yeah, about that. I've been curious, and if you'd rather not talk about it I'm perfectly okay with that, but ...what exactly was it like in there, with Ganon? I mean weren't you ever scared, lonely, tired...in need of the little girls room?"

Zelda was caught off guard by his line of questioning, she was immediately uncertain of what to say or how to explain it. "I'm not sure how to answer that," she admitted. Pondering the question, she spoke slowly, deliberately as if waiting for the right words to come to her. "Being sealed away with Ganon was like being trapped in some kind of stasis or frozen in time. I didn't have full control of my body, but I was still fully aware of what was going on outside of the castle."

"Riiight, I get it...so exactly how much spying did you do in there?"

Zelda giggled. "Oh enough."

"Oh well isn't that just great! Does that mean you witnessed me falling on my ass, tumbling down cliffs, getting rammed by wild animals, being struck by lightning and generally trying not to drown in a mere two inches of water?"

Zelda answered shyly, "Um, sometimes."

Link grimaced, closing his eyes as he felt a lump forming in his throat. "Oh...well what a disappointment your courageous knight must have been to you."

"You could never disappoint me, Link. You're the hero of Hyrule. No, you're more then that. You're...my hero."

The champion's azure blue orbs lit up at that statement. "Well then I guess I should feel honored."

"And so you should. For months you traversed Hyrule, scaling treacherous mountains, dense forests, scorching deserts. You braved lighting storms and sandstorms and even crazy flower ladies. You battled guardians and defeated some of the strongest of enemies which had infested Hyrule castle and then you single-handedly took on Calamity Ganon...alone."

Every word of that was true, however there was no way in Hyrule he was about to take all the credit. "Actually I had a little help. You were incredible by the way, did I ever tell you that?"

Zelda felt her face turn red with embarrassment. "I...I didn't really do anything. It was you, Link that saved us. Without you, this land would have been destroyed and everyone along with it."

"I had a job to do, Zelda. And I'd do it all over again if it meant keeping you and everyone in Hyrule safe."

"And we're forever indebted to you," Zelda reminded him, glancing out at the now inky darkness.

Link also noticed how late it had gotten. "Looks like it's too dark to travel now. We should probably camp here for the night," he suggested.

The Princess attempted to stifle a yawn. "Perhaps we should try and get as much rest as we can then. If we're to keep to our schedule we'll need to make an early start."

Link shuffled himself further away, allowing Zelda more room to lie down in the most comfortable position their surroundings would allow. "You go ahead, I think I'm just going to sit here a little while longer."

"Oh...okay then, well goodnight, Link."

"Goodnight, Zelda."

Sat across from the now peacefully slumbering Princess, Link silently watched the fire burn into the night. Every so often he would glance at her. He'd truly forgotten how cute she looked when she slept. It kind of reminded him of that time aboard Vah Naboris with the champion, Urbosa. Of course at the time things were rather strained between them, but now...now he felt they actually shared a bond...a bond of close friendship and for now that was all that mattered.

Karusa Desert (Yiga Clan hideout)

Heavy boots echoed off the walls which lined the dimly lit hallways of the Yiga clan hideout. Clad in crimson red robes and sporting a mask emblazoned with an inverted Sheikah emblem, the young defector strolled menacingly towards his destination.

The large, dusty cave-like room he appeared in was draped with long, whitish banners depicting the same inverted Sheikah eye. Looking around he was glad to see he had an audience, almost all of the entire clan were present, laughing and chattering amongst themselves, completely unaware of the seriousness of the situation.

I'll soon put a stop to such merriment. "Silence!" a cold voice boomed, interrupting the jovial mood. Immediately the ninja assassins obeyed, before quickly assembling themselves in front of their newly appointed leader.

"Now, you are probably wandering why I have summoned you all here," Master Toga declared in a deep, low hiss. He lifted his mask, revealing his dark hair, emerald green eyes and olive colored skin before continuing. "Just recently I have received some very disturbing news. A small group of our members patroling throughout central Hyrule have sent word that the great Calamity Ganon has fallen, bested in battle by our greatest enemy, the Hylian champion, Link."

For several minutes the collected group stood in tense silence, until the majority began expressing shock, fear and disbelief at what their master had just revealed to them.

Rezo, one of the elder clan members and second in command stepped forward. "Master Toga, however did this happen?"

Toga glared at the man in front of him, his voice growing harsh. "I'm afraid we have limited information about how exactly our master met his untimely demise. Perhaps it would seem the champion is much more intelligent and formidable then we originally gave him credit for."

"That's seems a reasonable explanation," Rezo offered. "After all, countless trained blademasters, footsoldiers and even travelers in disguise have been ordered to put an end to the hero, yet all have failed. And serve me if I'm correct, but it wasn't too long ago he infiltrated this very hideout, stole back that Gerudo heirloom and sent Master Kogha to his death."

"YOU IMBECILE!" Toga seethed. The only reason the champion succeeded in his quest was due to the incompetence of this brethren. However the great Calamity was no bumbling fool with a fetish for mighty bananas now, was he? Ganon was nestled safely within the confines of Hyrule castle. He was well protected by several guardians, including stalkers, scouts, skywatchers and turrets. So it really does beg the question, how did one boy manage to evade their watchful eye in order to confront the Calamity and defeat him in battle?!"

A female member by the name of Leela then spoke up. "Rumor has it that this Link didn't beat Ganon alone. It has been said that he managed to gain control of the four divine beasts. Once activated, their powers were used to weaken Ganon making him much more vulnerable to attack."

Toga's face was dark, his voice menacing. "WE MUST FIND THIS BOY IMMEDIATELY SO I CAN STRIP THE FLESH FROM HIS BONES AND FEED HIS CARCASS TO THE WOLVES!" He spoke to Rezo next. "I hope I have your full co-operation in helping to organize this task, hmmm?"

Rezo braced himself. "But master, at present we have no idea where he is. Now that the threat of the Calamity is over it is like he's vanished from the face of the earth."

"No, he is out there somewhere," Toga speculated, stroking his chin. "He's the hero, the champion. His heroic deeds would not go unnoticed or unrecognized. As a matter of fact the entire population of Hyrule is probably reveling in his victory as we speak. However, I'm about to insure that it is as short-lived as possible. Let's see how much of a hero he is when faced with an invisible army who is about to bring Hyrule to its knees."

"Master...Are you quite sure you want to launch such a large scale attack against one boy?" Rezo quizzed. "I mean with Calamity..."

Before the man could utter another word the blade of a deadly vicious sickle was positioned precariously close to his throat. "We have pledged our allegiance to Ganon for over one hundred years and it is not about to stop now! Master Kogha may not have taken his position as leader of this clan seriously, but I do! No good deed goes unpunished. Hyrule is about to pay dearly for the champion's actions. Now, if you are not with me then you are against me..."

The Yiga elder quivered uncontrollably. "Master...I didn't mean...I just thought..."

"Enough you blathering fool, we're wasting valuable time!" Toga snapped.

Rezo couldn't apologize enough. "I'm so sorry, master, please forgive me."

"Apology NOT accepted," Toga scolded. "Now get to work and round up every available soldier, ensure they are prepared to leave at first light. Our first stop will be Hyrule castle. I would like to see with my own eyes the place where our faithful master met his terrible fate."

"Yes, master."

"Good! Now leave! Get out!" Toga commanded.

Once they were alone, Leela the young Yiga woman approached the young assassin from behind, placing her hands on his shoulders. She could certainly feel how tense he was. "This boy certainly has you riled up, doesn't he?"

"He bested the mighty Ganon, I want him to pay...to suffer in the worse way possible!" Toga exclaimed.

"Oh and he will, we'll make sure of that," Leela promised, her dark green eyes narrowing into slits. "No matter what happens, brother, Ganon will be avenged."

Toga turned, embracing the young woman warmly. "Yes, sister. Very soon this chosen hero is going to wish he was never born."
