AN: An old oneshot. Told from an arctic wolf's POV.
Aquatic Sport
I was trapped. I could not escape.
My claws scrabbled at the slippery surface, desperate for any traction.
The waves knocked the ice, nearly throwing me off. Fear gripped my heart - suffocating it.
I yelped out. But it happened again.
The vicious waves continued to punish the ice beneath my paws. Continued to destroy the fragile surface supporting me. But I had to stay on because I had to survive.
I saw small ice burgs in the distance. If only I could jump from burg to burg, I could make it to the mainland. I would be safe. I would be free. I longed to run with my pack again.
My muscles tensed, ready to take the risk, but a sound stopped my movements.
Something bumped the ice. Moved it. My ears perked up in alarm. The sound came from under.
Under the water.
Again came the bump. I tried to ignore it and coiled my muscles again for the leap.
Again. But I was not ready for it. The bump felt like an earthquake and shook me to my core. I hurtled over to one side of the small floating ice piece. The waves washed my exhausted body off of the ice, and with it my only hope of survival.
The liquid cold froze me. Burned me. Made me stiff. I tried to claw my way back to the safety of the ice. But my claws could not get enough grip.
The sound of waves coming in my direction got my attention. I turned. I saw. I saw the sleek black body. The razor teeth. But I didn't have anytime to react.
The teeth sunk into my frigid body. But I didn't feel any pain. I was too cold. Too stiff to feel any agony. I was shaken like rag doll. I was ripped to pieces yet I didn't feel a thing. Except pain and the comforting darkness. It surrounded me like a blanket. I welcomed it.
And I felt no more.
AN: The short/sporadic sentences are intentional. I try to write as if a wolf would see the world. They operate on instinct, and they would not describe things in a lot of detail...especially when they are trying to survive.
To anyone who wonders what killed the wolf, it was an Orca (ie: Killer Whale.). There are a lot of great videos on Youtube showing how they hunt to flush prey off ice chunks into the water - its amazing to watch.
