Healing a Scarred Heart(Christian romance. NaNo sample)
Elaine stared in dismay at the mangled remains that lie on the hospital bed. She silently nodded to the doctors when asked of she recognized the remains. As the police tried explain how the accident occurred, she listened calmly the whole time thinking to herself, Oh Lord why?
Slowly, Elaine walked back to her silver Montana and climbed in. As she started the engine, she began thinking back over the last six months of her husbands life. Jared Hartmen, her husband of eleven years worked in construction doing roofing for Harvey's Building Up Construction. He had been a faithful employee for just over fifteen years but even his perfect record and good standing in the company good not save him when the company was forced to do some major layoffs.
This didn't bring the happy families support down at all however. Jared and Elaine had always taught their five children that the Lord was the main supplier of the family and that He would help their daddy find another job. However it wasn't going to be as easy as the family thought. Suddenly money began to get very tight and day by day Jared's spirits fell,
With week after week passing Elaine started to worry about not only Jared and his new odd behavior but also how she was suppose to care for her family on just a teaching salary. Elaine began looking for another job much to the displeasure of her now, couch potato husband. Against his complaints she started working at the Luna Café in the evenings, on top of working at Day Private Academy, where during the day she taught preschool. At night after working at the school she came home to feed, bathe, and tuck her children in to bed before working grave yard shift at the café. Every evening was the same routine, not once did Jared offer to help or even move from the couch.
Two months after beginning her job at the café, Elaine was finally able to take a Saturday off to spend some time with her children. Elaine let herself be lead to the playroom by her five year old daughter Grace Ann, were they all had a tea party breakfast waiting for her, Elaine smiled weakly, amazed at how independent her children had become.
"We made you some pancakes Mama," nine year old Serenity Mae announced.
"Only because we did not know how to make eggs," her twin, Reika Aelizabeth, replied.
"Did you clean up after yourselves when you were through?" Elaine asked afraid of what Jared might say or do if he awoke and found a mess in the kitchen.
"I helped them clean up cause they made me," seven year old James Edward frowned before sticking his tongue out at his older sisters.
"Mama why do you whisper?" Sebastian Scott, the baby of the family, asked. Elaine looked at her children who were now surrounding her and was about to answer when Serenity spoke up for her.
"Mom does not want to wake daddy," she said simply to her baby brother.
"Why?" he asked, looking perplexed. Being only three he assumed if he was up so was the rest of the world.
Reika replied, "Because Dad is not feeling well and needs his rest so that he'll have the strength when God sends him a job." Sebastian seemed pleased with that answer and went back to his miniature farm on the other side of the room. After breakfast Elaine and the older children sat around and watched Sebastian and Grace as they put on a play called Farm Town. Elaine could not contain the grin and pleasure she felt as she watched them play.
"Mom your smiling. You and dad have not smiled in forever," James said. "Is something wrong with dad?"
Elaine looked at her children not really sure how to explain what was going on so that the little ones would understand. She had already explained to Serena and Rei and for her that was hard enough. She sighed and let her head fell, " Mommy is not sure what is wrong with Daddy." Five year old Grace Ann came across the room and sat down in her lap. "We can pray," Grace said with such simplicity.
