This is my first fan fiction, so I'd appreciate any comments or suggestions! I know, it's rated M but that comes more in future chapters. So read on and watch for the next one soon!
Clutching her books, Kate slammed the locker door shut and walked down the hall to the bathroom. Tears flooded down her cheeks as she locked a stall door and leaned against it. How could this day get any worse? First the F on her biology test, than the call from her mom, and now this.
"Kate? Is that you?" Claire Littleton's voice questioned. Kate opened the stall door a crack to see Claire standing there, looking concerned. She stepped out, looking at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were red and a few mascara streaks were under each one.
"What's wrong?" Claire asked in her perky Australian accent. She was new to the school this year, but over the summer she had become good friends with Kate. They had played on the same summer soccer team and been camp counselors together.
"Oh...just...um," Kate started, choking back a sob. "You know Jake, that guy I was going out with? He dumped me, just now." She started to cry again, but Claire was quick to wipe away the tears.
"It's all right Kate. Come on, if he did that to you he's not worth it anyway. Think about all the other guys there are here. Really, I'm sure most of the guys here are happy to hear you're single."
Kate faked a smile and tried to cheer up. She just couldn't though;Jake was...well, hot. And funny, and perfect (or she thought). But maybe Claire was right. It was time to start looking for a new guy.
"Take this," Claire said, handing Kate a mascara container and some eyeliner. "Get all pretty again. You can give it back to me on the bus - I've gotta get to art in the north wing. See you around!"
"Oh Claire, thanks!" Kate said, her spirits lifting.
"And Kate?"
"Yeah?"
"I heard there's a new guy coming to our school on Monday, just in case you were, well, looking for someone different. And from what Alex says, he's hot."
Kate giggled. Leave it up to Alex to find out every possible thing about any guy you could name. Surprisingly, she was feeling considerably better after talking to Claire, and a new guy at the school gave her a little more confidence. She applied the makeup slowly, and looked at herself once more in the mirror before tossing it into her purse. Kate walked out of the bathroom and down the hall to her next class -geometry. She sighed. Oh well, she thought, At least this time I won't be overcome by boredom. I've got something to think about.
Kate hopped off the bus later that day and turned off the iPod she'd bought two weeks ago with her tutoring money. She walked through the front door, dreading what she might find inside. The call on her cell phone earlier had brought nothing but bad news. Wayne had gotten drunk yet again and beat up her mother.
She tiptoed through the hallway, praying Wayne was asleep. Fortunately, he was. Kate found her mother in the living room with one black eye and several bruises on her right arm.
"Are you okay Mom?" Kate asked, collapsing on a chair. "I wanted to come home earlier, honest, but you know how you have to sign out with an adult? It's so stupid, but I didn't wanna risk getting caught, especially today..." She left out the part about her failing grade.
"Oh Katie, don't worry about me. I'm fine, see?" She got off the couch, wincing a little. "Now go. Get. I don't want him to hurt you when he sees you."
"Mom, really. If you want me to stay here just tell me."
"Katie, I mean it. Go!" She waved her arms toward the door.
Kate sighed, giving her mom a brief hug. She picked up her backpack and walked back down the hallway. Quietly opening the door and stepping outside, she headed to Claire's.
Who could this mysterious guy be? lol...review! Thanks...you will probably see your ideas in an upcoming chapter!
