AN: This one is a special favour to a friend who has just had a baby.
To anyone observing Joan Lin at this precise moment in time, could easily come to the conclusion that she was as energetic and bouncy as her daughter as she paced the room with a suppressed energy.
Nor was she the only one in the room who was burning with energy. Her husband Chen sat at the table, dancing his fingers off one another, tapping his feet and a twinkle could be seen in his eyes. He was clearly as excited as she was, even if he was less open in his actions.
Now to any such hypothetical observer, the air of nervous energy might suggest something unusually special was about to happen, something extraordinary, but precisely what they were expecting was not immediately obvious.
A white car pulled up outside the restaurant and Joan rushed to the door before the car had finished parking.
"They're here, they're here, they're here, they're here, they're here, they're here, they're here!" Joan squealed excitedly, her eyes alight with excitement as she fiddled with the door, too excited to open the door properly. Eventually she managed, against the odds and she smiled as she greeted her son in law.
"So where is she?" she asked, peering over his shoulder to where her daughter Hay Lin was getting something out of the car. "Where's my granddaughter? I want to see my first grandchild!"
"Oh, we left her with a neighbour," her son in law said almost nonchantly. "We thought the long journey would tire her out too much, so we thought it would be easier if it was just us."
If looks could kill, her daughter would have become a widow several times over on the spot. Fortunately for said young man, they do not. However he swore he could have gotten frostbite from Joan and Chen Lin's expressions.
"Hi mom," Hay Lin said cheerfully as she bounced up to the door with a bundle in her arms. The bundle seemed to stir slightly, before settling back down to sleep. Hay Lin however looked as though sleep was something of a stranger these past few nights, something Joan could sympathise with. Although that didn't appear to have stopped her from bouncing. "Mom, say hello to Evie, our latest addition to our family."
Joan shot her son in law a bemused look briefly and turned to look at her adorable granddaughter and Hay Lin gently handed her baby over to her. Evie opened her eyes and stared out at Joan's face and Joan was instantly smitten.
"I think I've been spending too much time in Irma's company," Caleb said to Hay Lin with a smile and Hay Lin gave him a smile.
"I think my parents have fallen in love with her," she said as Joan and Chen cooed over the newest arrival in their little family.
"Well who wouldn't? She's perfect," Caleb replied and they both smiled.
AN: This story was largely inspired by a true story. My dad pretended that my mum and him had left me with a neighbour the first time I went to see my grandparents. (I was pretty much a newborn-ish at the time.) I thought it would be a good idea to play with it.
