So, without further adieu, I give you Chapter One!

Chapter One

Monday Morning Blues

Kendall awoke that morning feeling… different.

He didn't feel sick and he didn't feel stressed; he just felt off. Kendall sighed as he readjusted himself in his bed, lying on his back so he could stare at the ceiling. He thought long and hard about what exactly he was feeling.

He remembered having the same feeling right before Carlos had gone to work for Gustavo as his assistant when they needed to pay him back, and again when he was about to do his figure skating routine with Camille. Even though he had only experienced this feeling a handful of times, he knew what it was. It was the feeling in his gut telling him that something terrible was about to happen, and from what he could remember, that feeling was never wrong. For what it's worth, Carlos had flooded Rocque Records that day with foam and Camille still hadn't completely forgiven him.

But what he couldn't understand was why. Why was he feeling this way? He had just woken up. It was barely seven o' clock in the morning. He hadn't done anything to evoke some terrible consequence. As far as he could remember, he hadn't done anything that karma would have a problem with.

He sighed deciding that he wasn't going to dwell over this. After all, it was only a feeling. He had to focus on more oppressing matters, and right now it was time to focus on the hardest, most exasperating task known to man…

Waking his friends

Kendall shimmied out from underneath his covers and swung his legs over the side of the bed. Kendall cringed as his bare feet pressed against the cold, wooden floor and hissed at the absence of warm that had been obtained from his blanket. Tiredly, he pushed himself off the bed.

With all the stealth he could muster, he shuffled over to Logan's part of the room and hovered over his sleeping form. His head was towed back and his arm was thrown over his head. His mouth was left slightly ajar and a light track of saliva trailed down his chin. He was snoring ever so slightly. He bit back an 'aww'. It was quite a sight to see. Logan, normally the uptight worrywart of the group, looked so peaceful and calm. Too bad he had to shatter his dreams… literally

He gently shook Logan's shoulder. "Wake up… Wake up!"

Logan blindly waved him off. "Stoppit… Go 'way, Kindle." He slurred tiredly; his voice was barely audible at this time. "M' trying to sleep," He snuggled closer to his comforters and drifted back off to sleep.

Kendall playfully rolled his eyes, shaking him a little more forcefully. "Come on Logan, wake up!" he urged, but he could tell he was already gone when his slow and steady breathing started up again. He tried again. "Come on, bud! It's time to wake up!" He said, pulling on Logan's arm.

Logan sighed and angrily pulled his arm out of Kendall's grip so he could tuck it back beneath his head. "Give me one good reason why I should?"

"After rehearsal you get to work on your science project!" Kendall tried to persuade.

Logan's eyes flickered open. "I'm awake!" He threw back his covers and jumped wobbly to his feet. He made an attempt to leap off his bed but his foot got tangled in the blankets. Both he and the covers went down like a sack of potatoes, landing on the floor with thud!

Kendall rolled his eyes, but went to go see if he was okay. He crawled to the edge of his bed and looked down. Logan's head popped out from underneath the covers. He sat up and smiled sheepishly at Kendall. Kendall chuckled at Logan, he was relieved to see that Logan was okay; however, he still couldn't help but laugh. Kendall shook his head. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm okay!" He said, and with that he jumped back to his feet and bolted out of the room.

Kendall playfully rolled his eyes again. As quickly as his sleepy body would allow, he scrambled to slip into his robe he'd left on his closet door and then slide his feet into his black, comfy slippers.

Kendall carefully tiptoed his way towards the door, cautiously maneuvering around the mess of scattered clothes and sheet music. He then silently eased the door open. He leaned his head out of the crack he'd left and listened intently for footsteps - or for any sound. He almost wished that he would hear something going on in the hallway because that would mean that James and Carlos were already up… but he already knew that the day that James and Carlos were up before the sunrise was the day that pigs fell from the sky. When he heard nothing, he- cautious not to make a sound- peered out into the hall. The hallway was completely vacant and he slipped through the open crack and shut the door behind him.

As Kendall trudged down the hall, he could feel the amount of dread in his stomach intensify. This was the worst part of the day, because it was always such a hassle trying to get them out of bed. He was kind of hoping that they would make his life easier for once, but again he knew that that probably wasn't going to happen.

Kendall burst through the door and came to a halt at James' bed. James was sleeping soundly in his bed, clutching a can of 'Cuda Man Spray to his chest. Just as Kendall was about to wake him, James moved in his sleep. "James?" Kendall inquired.

"Better wear your Cuda!" James recited in his sleep, lazily wiggling his fingers by his face.

Kendall clasped his hand over his mouth to stifle the laughter. He couldn't believe that James talked in his sleep. "James, wake up!" He exclaimed once he'd composed himself.

"Five more minutes!" James muttered, rolling over on the other side.

Kendall sighed; there was no way he was going to get James out of this bed. He arched eyebrow as an idea popped into his head. "All right, James," Kendall began, speaking to James as if he were a small child. "But I can't guarantee that there will be enough time for you to do your hair." James was up and out of bed without another word; Kendall presumed that he was already heading towards the bathroom.

Kendall laughed as James' footsteps disappeared down the hallway, but his face quickly became serious as he was faced with the biggest challenge of all…It was now time to wake up the bowling ball

For the first time in months, Carlos slept. Anyone who knew Carlos knew that Carlos was like an endless ball of energy. Just getting Carlos to sleep was a challenge enough. So when he had finally gotten Carlos to fall asleep, he was out. Like out out. Out like a light. A horn could have been blown in his ear and he wouldn't have been awoken. There could have been an earthquake, or a fire, or a herd of elephants stampeding through the apartment and Carlos would have slept right through it. Kendall always wondered if the fact that Carlos was the baby of them had anything influence on the way he slept. Like a baby… Kendall mused.

Carlos sighed contently in his sleep and tugged the pillow to his chest, which made him look even younger. He almost didn't want to wake him; who knew when the next time Carlos was going to willingly got to sleep? But he also knew that if they were late to work one more time, Gustavo would surely blow a gasket.

Carlos let out a loud snore as Kendall knelt down beside him in his bed. The feeling in Kendall's gut was going haywire. Perhaps it had something to do with Carlos…Kendall, once again, shook it off. He had to be over reacting…

"Carlos…." He called. Kendall sighed when Carlos continued to snore. "Car-los" he sang, but got no response. "Carlos, wake up!" The only response he got that time was Carlos' snoring. Kendall carefully pulled Carlos into a sitting position, holding him up by his shoulders. "Carlos?" Kendall leaned into Carlos' ear. "Carlos, I'm making corn dogs for breakfast…" Carlos didn't flinch. "Huh; nothing… That normally works," Losing his patience, he began shaking him wildly. "WAKE UP!" he yelled at the top of his lungs. Again, Carlos didn't even stir; he simply lolled his head back when Kendall stopped shaking him and continued to sleep.

Kendall groaned, letting go of Carlos' arms and the boy fell back against his pillows, seemingly unfazed. Kendall threw his hands down in exasperation. Trying to wake his youngest best friend from his comatose state was looking implausible. Kendall raked a hand through his hair. There was no way he was going to get Carlos out of bed and downstairs any time soon.

Kendall smiled as an idea popped into his head.

"Sorry, buddy," Kendall muttered through a grunt as he pulled Carlos into his sitting position. He quickly draped his arms over his shoulder, wrapped his arm around Carlos' waist and heaved himself off the bed. As he readjusted Carlos' weight on his shoulder, he steadied himself on his feet and carried him out of the room.

In the hallway on the way to the kitchen, Kendall started icily over his shoulder at Carlos. "You've got to be the soundest sleeper in the history of the world!" He grunted when he tried to reposition Carlos on his shoulder. "I don't know how Freight Train does this all the time…When you wake up, you owe me big time!" he muttered, though he was certain that his complaint had fallen on deaf ears.

As Kendall moved his way into the dining area and kitchen, the unmistakable aroma of one of their favorite breakfast foods flooded his nostrils. HE could tell that Carlos could smell it too because he could hear Carlos' stomach growling.

The teen, enchanted by the smell, sped up his pace to get a better view of the kitchen to make sure that his nose wasn't fooling him. He skidded to a stop as they got to the kitchen table. His mother looked over their shoulders to him, smiling warmly and inviting him to sit down. "Good morning, sweetie!" Mrs. Knight greeted, planting a motherly kiss on his cheek.

Kendall chuckled in disbelief. "Mom, what are you still doing here? I thought and Katie would be halfway to Grandma's house by now."

Mrs. Knight smiled before turning back to frying her bacon. "We're leaving in a bit." She nodded, using her spatula to flip the pieces over. "I just wanted to make you guys breakfast before we left. I know how hard it is trying to get the others up and rolling."

"Thanks, Mom." Kendall smiled.

"You're welcome, Sweetheart," Mrs. Knight nodded again, placing the wooden spoon back in the oatmeal. She then picked up the pot and placed it on the burner beside it to cool. She turned off the oven with a sigh and turned back to Kendall with her hands on her hips.

"You didn't have to do that, Mom; I could have made breakfast!"

"Don't be silly; it's no problem!"

"I'm so tired," Katie whined, emerging from her room with her suitcase and her pillow rubbing her eyes.

Mrs. Knight smiled at her. "You can sleep in the car." She said, ruffling her daughter's hair when she came to stand beside her. "Say goodbye to your brother, Katie."

Katie yawned, going to give Kendall a hug when she stopped. Looking up with a quizzical look, she eyed Kendall and raised an eyebrow. "Rhyme or reason?"

Kendall chuckled, realizing he still had Carlos draped over his shoulder. "He wouldn't wake up."

"I see!" Katie laughed, hugging her brother's side. Kendall wrapped an arm around her in an awkward one armed hug. "Bye, Big Brother,"

"Bye, Baby Sister." He said, rubbing her back affectionately.

Once Katie had released and gone over to stand by her mother again, she sighed. "I love Grandma, but why can't we go see her in the afternoon like normal people?"

"Because it takes us half a day just to get there! We have so much stuff planned and I want to have plenty of time to do it all!"

Kendall let out a sigh of his own. "I wish I was coming too." He muttered truthfully. "I miss Grandma."

"I know, Honey, but you know Gustavo would never let you go." Mama Knight smiled, hugging Kendall's side as well. Kendall smiled sadly as his mother gave him another quick peck on the cheek. "Are you sure you can you handle it?"

Kendall laughed. "Mom, we're fine! You don't have to worry!" He tried to assure. "Carlos, Mama Knight and Katie are leaving!" No surprise; Carlos continued to sleep. Kendall shrugged a shoulder. "It was worth a shot." He said with another chuckle. He walked his family to the door. After exchanging smiles, Katie opened the door and wheeled her way out towards the elevator. "Give Grandma my love."

"Will do, Sweetheart; give the guys mine!"

"Will do, Mom; love you!"

"Love you too! We'll see you in a week!"

And with that she was gone. She closed the door behind her and scrambled to catch up with Katie down the hall. Kendall smile to himself. He could handle this. He could definitely handle this…

"All right, Carlos," He breathed out as he placed him in a chair and pushed him into the table. He carefully plucked a piece of bacon out of the frying pan, knelt down beside Carlos and held it under his unconscious friend's nose. In an instant, Carlos' eyes flickered open and he looked around wearily. "Welcome back!" Kendall joked. "Bacon: works every time."

"Where am I? How did I get here? Was I sleepwalking again?" Carlos asked.

"No, buddy, I carried you." When Carlos gave him a confused look, he simply handed him the bacon. Carlos shrugged but didn't hesitate to take a bite.

Kendall smiled brightly, patting Carlos' head while he grabbed his bowl. Carefully, he spooned a clump of oatmeal into the bowl and set it in front of Carlos. He then grabbed Carlos' hand and placed a spoon in his palm. "Eat." He patted Carlos on the shoulder before going to set the rest of the table.

At that moment, Logan came in, fully dressed in his usually attire. "Hey, Kendall!" He greeted.

Kendall's eyes darted him and he let out a breath of relief. "Hey! Help me with him; I'm going to check on James. James!" Kendall blurted, throwing the remaining utensils down on the table and darting in the direction of the bathroom.

Logan gave him an indignant look before sighing in defeat and plopping down beside Carlos.

As Kendall ran down the hall, he could distinctly hear the sound of Logan scolding Carlos. "No, Carlos, I don't care what Kendall told you, you cannot have corndogs for breakfast!" Kendall snickered to himself. He always thought it was adorable how Carlos' disoriented, tired mind worked in the morning.

When he made it to their bathroom, he found that the door was shut and that meant that James was either: a) in the middle of applying his hairspray, b) in the middle of applying his man spray, or c) all of the above.

Kendall playfully rolled his eyes, but pressed his ear against the door. "James?" He called, knocking on the bathroom door. "Are you ok?"

In a moment, the door swung open. Kendall let out a yelp as he fell forward, having leaning against the door for support. James stepped out only clad in his sweat pants. "Have you seen my lucky comb?" He asked, sounding out of breath as if he'd just been searching the entire bathroom for it.

Kendall stood up, readjusting his shirt. "Have you checked your pants pocket?" Kendall asked, giving him a knowing look.

James arched an eyebrow, looking confused, patting the pocket of his pants. His face lit up and he dug it out of his pocket. "Oh!" He smiled, kissing the comb. "Thanks, man!" James said, giving Kendall an appreciative pat on his shoulder. Then he stepped back into the bathroom, slamming the door in Kendall's face.

Kendall glared at the door for a moment before blowing some hair out his face. "Hurry up in there, James!"

"Got it!" James yelled from the other side and Kendall trudged back to his room to get himself dressed.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Logan was having a little bit of trouble getting Carlos to eat his oatmeal.

Logan gently nudged Carlos with his elbow. "Carlos, you have to eat your oatmeal, too." Logan said softly, trying to coax Carlos into eating. "You can't live on bacon!"

"Says you!" Carlos muttered churlishly, popping the last of it into his mouth with a smug smile. Suddenly, Carlos' eyes fluttered shut and his head fell into his oatmeal.

"Oh, Carlos!" Logan chided, lifting his friend's head out of the bowl and scrubbing his face with his napkin. "Kendall?" he called.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, he's not eating!" Logan groaned in disgust as he scraped the gunk off of Carlos' face.

"Then get him dressed; he can eat later!"

"Got it!" Logan confirmed.

"Logan," Carlos whined. "I don't want to eat my oatmeal anymore."

"I can see that," Logan muttered, wiping the last morsel off his face. "Now, come here!" Logan sighed, grabbing Carlos' arm and bringing him closer. Logan raised his arms so he could slide Carlos' dirty pajama sweatshirt off, messing his hair up in the process. Carlos didn't protest as he was dragged to his room and sat down on his bed. "You know that this would be a lot easier and a lot quicker if you helped me out." Carlos merely grumbled a mess of incoherent sounds. "Well, all right then." Logan smiled, he plopped a clean shirt over his sleepy, unresponsive friend's head.

Carlos pulled his arms through the sleeves and folded his arms over his chest. "I'm too tired, Logan. I want to go back to sleep." Carlos said, taking a seat on his bed.

Logan sighed, sitting down beside him so Carlos could place his head on his shoulder. "Don't we all, buddy? Don't we all?"

Kendall, now dressed in usual everyday attire, scrambled to pull his sock onto his foot as he hopped out of his room once again. Abruptly, he stopped outside the bathroom door and gave it a series of knocks. "James, are you still in there?"

"Don't rush me, Kendall!" James yelled back. "You can't rush perfection!"

"James, you look fine!"

There was a long pause before the door opened. "You really mean that?" James teased with a toothy smile.

Kendall could have kicked himself at his poor choice of words. But instead of showing his embarrassment, he tried to mask it by playfully punching him. "Oh, just shut up and come on!" He exclaimed, grabbing James by the collar of his shirt, ignoring his protests as he pulled him down the hall and to the kitchen. "Sit down," He said, shoving James into his seat. "Eat your breakfast," he placed a bowl of slightly cold oatmeal in front of him. "And finish getting ready! We're already running late and Gustavo's going to kill us if we're late again!"

"Ok dude, chill!" James muttered, throwing his hands in a defensive position. He slowly picked up his spoon and began to eat, but stopped when he saw the way that Kendall was eating. "Kendall, slow down! You're going to choke!"

"No time!" Kendall hissed with his mouthful of food as he tried to shovel even more in. He quickly guzzled down the remainder of his milk. He gasped and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "You done?" Kendall asked.

"Well, actually-?"

"Good!" Kendall muttered before James could finish and snatched his bowl out of his grip. James shrugged, running off to the bathroom to bush his teeth.

Carlos and Logan were already standing in front of the mirror when James barged in, shoving them aside. "James!" Carlos whined, though his voice came out muffled with his toothbrush in his mouth. In a fit of rage, he shoved James back as hard as he could away from the mirror.

James tumbled backwards into the door and went down like a ton of bricks. He sat up and glared at Carlos, jumping to his feet as Carlos continued to brush his teeth.

"Hey, don'tpush me!" James snarled, shoving Carlos back as hard as he could.

Carlos tripped over Logan and had he not been there to catch him, he would have made a painful contact with the floor. "You pushed me!" Carlos hissed, wrenching himself away from Logan and pushing him back.

"You pushed me first!" he screamed in his face, making him cringe and take a step back. James smirked in triumph, turning his attention back to the mirror.

"Did not!" Carlos yelled, shoving James back.

James glared and, without saying a word, he shoved Carlos back. This time when Carlos crashed into Logan, they both went down. Carlos groaned in agony as he sat up, rubbing his head. "Did too."

Carlos growled, pushed himself onto his feet and glared at James. "That's it!" he yelled, slamming tooth brush on the counter.

James and Carlos glowered at each other, looking deep into each other's eyes and getting so close that they were practically nose to nose. At a time like this, Carlos would have plopped his helmet over his head for further protection, but he was too angry do go and find it.

"Hey, why don't we just focus on getting ready for the day?" Logan tried to assuage, stepping next to Carlos and trying to pull him back. Carlos glared harder.

"It's ok, Logan. Let's leave James to play with his hair!" Carlos had barely gotten the full sentence out before she was cut off. James finally lost it and tackled him to the ground. Carlos, who was not expecting the sudden attack, fell backwards and smacked the back of his head on the ground. This forced an involuntary 'oof!' to escape his lips.

Kendall could hear a medley of different noises coming from the bathroom—a medley of shouts and cries and things clattering to the floor— as he was walking by. The distinguishable sound of a crash rung in his ears and he couldn't help but cringe. He backed up, knocking anxiously on the door. "Guys, are you ready?" he asked, his voice laced with worry.

"Just a minute!" Rustling could be heard on the other side of the door, then after hearing Carlos and James' pitiful groans of protest, the door opened and Logan dragged Carlos and James out by their ears. Kendall arched an eyebrow at the state of his two best friends. Logan let out an exhausted breath as he dragged them over to where Kendall was standing. "Ready."

Kendall chuckled and grabbed Carlos when Logan handed him off. Carlos pouted, rubbing his ear as he glared daggers as James and Logan. They proceeded to push the two lazier boys out the door.

Logan's finger tips were grazing the door knob when something in Kendall's pocket began to buzz. "Make it count, play it straight, don't look back, don't hesitate…" Kendall's eyes widened. "WAIT!" Kendall exclaimed, halting his friends just as they were reaching the door. The three best friends stood as frozen as statues as they waited for further instructions. Kendall carefully fished out his phone, pressed a button and held it up to his ear. "Hello? Hi, Kelly! Uh huh… Uh huh… Okay… Okay… Yeah, I'll tell them… Okay… Bye!" Kendall hung up the phone and looked up only to find that the sculpture like teens had turned around to stare at him expectantly. "That was Kelly; she said that we don't have to come in today."

The youngest and the oldest paused for a moment; they looked at each other then back at Kendall and Logan. Simultaneously, their eyes rolled to the back of their heads and then, before the others had the chance to catch them, went limp, falling into big heaps onto floor.

The two left standing sighed; Kendall and Logan looked at each other. They shrugged at one another, deciding to follow their other friend's lead. They closed their eyes and the two remaining members of the band fell on the floor beside the others…
