A is for Amnesia
Emma had been driving home late at night after a long shift at the station. She had promised Regina that she wouldn't drive if she was too tired, but she just wanted to go home and figured there'd be no one on the road at this hour.
Unfortunately for the beloved Sheriff, it started raining heavily just after she left the station. "Damn!" the blonde cursed and slowed down until her vision cleared a little. But the weather was only getting worse and before long it was storming.
On the other side of town, Regina woke up from the thunder. Looking to her left, she sighed worriedly as she noticed her wife wasn't in bed with her. Picking up her phone from the nightstand, the brunette dialed her wife's work place and waited for her to pick up.
"Sheriff station, this is David Nolan, how may I help you?" came the answer.
"David, it's Regina." The brunette told her father-in-law.
"Ah, Regina, how are you?" The man asked as if it was completely normal that the brunette called the station in the middle of the night.
"I was just calling to ask Emma when she'd be home," Regina explained, hoping that Emma would be safe.
"Emma?" David asked, "She left about fifteen minutes ago. I'm sure she'll be there soon, Regina."
The brunette sighed and looked outside her bedroom window. "I hope she's alright. The storm is getting worse."
Ever the hopeful man, Charming told Regina not to worry. "She'll be fine, Regina. Emma is tough; a little storm won't make her not get home. You'll see, she'll be there soon."
Getting irritated about his hopefulness, she thanked him politely and hung up the phone. She dialed Emma's mobile number and waited once more for her to answer.
"You've reached Emma Swan. I'm not available at the moment, but –" Regina hung up the phone. A tear rolled down her eyes. She didn't know why, but she had a bad feeling.
Her bedroom door opened and her fifteen-year-old son walked in. "Mom, I can't sleep." He told her.
She hastily wiped the tears from her face and walked over to him. "What's the matter, Henry?"
"I don't know. Where's Ma?" He asked with a frown on his face.
"She's on her way home. I'm sure she'll be here any minute." She tried to sound optimistic, not to scare her son, but it wasn't working.
"But Mom, there's a storm outside. What if something happened to her?" He sounded so young and so scared in that moment; it broke Regina's heart.
Regina pulled her son into a hug and held him tightly against her. Silent tears were running down her face.
It didn't take long, before she got a call. "Emma?" She answered hopefully.
"I'm sorry, Regina, but this is Dr. Whale?" If Henry weren't still holding her, she would have fallen to her knees sobbing.
"Emma?" She asked in a small, broken voice.
"Emma was in a car crash. She's stable, but she hasn't woken up yet. She had a serious head injury, so there might be some brain damage, but we'll only know that for certain once she's awake." The doctor explained.
"We'll be there soon." Regina told him and hung up.
"What's wrong? Is Ma okay?" Henry asked panicked.
"Go get dressed, Henry, I'll explain in the car.
10 minutes later, mother and son were in the car, speeding to the hospital. By then the storm had died down, so it was safe again to be outside.
"Will you tell me what's going on, please?" Henry asked, looking at his brunette mother with frightened eyes.
"I'm dropping you of at your grandparents', before going to see Emma in the hospital. She was in a car accident, Henry." Tears rolled down the Mayor's face, while she kept looking ahead.
"No! I want to go with you! I want to see her too!" Henry yelled, as he started crying forcefully. "I can't lose her, we just found her." He sobbed.
Realizing it might be better for both of them to stay together, she changed her directions and drove straight to the hospital.
"I want to see my wife, Emma Swan-Mills. She was in a car accident." Regina explained to the nurse at the front desk.
"Very well, Madame Mayor, but Dr. Whale said one person at the time." The nurse said in a neutral tone.
"I don't care what Dr. Whale said, I want to see my wife and my son wants to see his mother. We're going in together." Hearing the Mayor's anger, the nurse flinched and decided not to contradict the Mayor's wishes.
Upon entering the room, Regina's face paled. Seeing Emma so fragile and lifeless on the bed broke her heart. "Oh, Emma, my love, why did you have to go out into the storm."
Hours later, while Henry was asleep in one of the chairs and Regina was stroking Emma's hand, she felt the blonde stir. "Emma? My love, are you awake?"
The only reply she got was a loud grown. The brunette stood and rushed to the hallway, calling for a doctor to come and check on her wife.
Soon, Dr. Whale hurried into the room. Regina sat once more into the chair next to Emma's bed, while taking the blonde's hand.
"Mrs. Swan-Mills?" no response. "Emma?" blinking rapidly, the blonde tried to open her eyes.
"Where am I?" Her voice sounded tired and weak.
"You're in the hospital, Emma. Do you remember what happened?" The blonde frowned and thought for a long moment.
"No," was the only answer she gave. She looked around the room and gave mother and son a confused look.
"What's the last thing you remember?" the doctor asked.
"Well, I was about to go to meet my new foster family when I decided I was done and ran away." Emma's eyes widened dramatically. She signaled for the doctor to move closer. "Are they the new foster family?" she asked so quietly only Whale could hear.
Whale sighed and turned to Regina. "I'm sorry, Regina, but Emma seems to be suffering from amnesia."
"Amnesia?!" Both Emma and Regina yelled out at the same time, a horrified look on both their faces.
