Lost

By magic of the moon

Disclaimer: I am not Marissa Meyer (darn!), so therefore I do not own Cinder. She has her own fanfic account—look up author Alicia Blade—which she fills with loads of Sailor Moon stories. Also, some of this idea came from reading her short story, Glitches. You can read it on .

Linh Adri stared down at her portscreen in disbelief, reading the message over and over again.

Dear Linh-jie,

We regret to inform you that Linh Peony has passed away at…

Tears blurred Adri's vision, making her unable to read on. Why? Why did the plague have to claim both her husband and her daughter? Garan's death was bad enough, but now her youngest daughter's death… She had lost so much, and it was all because of one girl—

"Cinder! Have you seen this?" Adri called. There was no answer. Adri stormed down to her ward's room, and yanked open the door. "Cinder!"

But the room was empty, except for Iko, in the corner. "Where is Cinder?" Adri demanded.

"L-linh-jie…" Iko began.

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"Come here, you useless droid."

Iko obeyed, only to be shocked as Adri shut the droid off. Soon, Adri was taking Iko apart, searching the droid's memory. She gasped in disgust at what she found. Then, putting the remnants of Iko in a box, Adri went to contact the runaway cyborg agency.

After dealing with the cyborg girl, Adri went to her own room, where she spent a while more crying. This wasn't fair. That retched piece of metal that destroyed her family was living, while her daughter and husband were not.

One of Garan's last sentences ran through her mind. Adri, love, you must take care of the girl.

Adri sneered at the thought. The girl was the whole reason she had lost everything. She remembered the cold night where Garan found out he had caught the plague, and was taken away. Even then she knew that was the last time she would ever see him.

Garan… Why did you leave me?

Adri couldn't help but cry harder. The pain from the hole in her heart, the one that Garan's death caused, had started to fade ever so slightly over the years. Now, it was open again, wider than before. Why did she have to suffer through all this? The same emptiness and grief filled Adri again as when she first saw the comm.

Finally, an hour later, Adri composed herself. She could save the tears for later. Now, though, she had another funeral to plan.

[A/N: How was it? I read Cinder over the summer and got completely hooked, and when I read Glitches, it gave me this idea. Adri had lost a lot, and it made me see her in a new way. Maybe she isn't as bad as we thought. Please review!]
