Jade Katherine Frey was a muggle-born. When a strangely dressed woman came to her parent's front door and asked to speak to them about Jade's schooling, she was confused. When she was told she was a witch and was to attend a magical school along with other witches and wizards, she laughed. It had explained everything, all the strange things that had happened when she felt endangered or emotional. The woman, McGonagall, had explained that Jade would learn to control the magic and learn how to use it.
The woman explained to Jade how to get to Diagon Alley to collect her school supplies and how to get to platform 9 ¾ where she would catch the Hogwarts Express to get to the school.
So there Jade stood, looking up at the large red train in awe. This train would take her to a place she never believed would exist. There were people all over platform 9 ¾ parents and students, each saying goodbye to each other. Jade had said goodbye to her parents at the car. They weren't fully on board with her being magical. In fact, her father wasn't impressed.
Jade walked towards the train hauling her heavy trunk behind her. She was struggling to pull it along, using both of her hands and turning around constantly, almost running into people. All of a sudden, the trunk started floating. Jade's green eyes widened in surprise as she looked around to find a reason behind her now floating trunk.
She found it. A woman stood not far away, her wand in the air and a soft smile on her face. When she caught Jade's eye, she began advancing towards the girl. She had dark brown hair, a soft heart shaped face and hazel eyes.
"You seemed to be struggling far more than you deserved," the woman said once she got close enough.
Jade fumbled to find her voice, "um…thank…thank you."
"It's my pleasure. What's your name darling?"
"Jade…Jade Frey."
"Frey. Not a name I've heard before, are you a muggle born sweetheart?"
Jade nodded.
"Ah. Well I'm Euphemia Potter. And it's a pleasure to meet you Jade."
The woman held out a hand which Jade hesitantly reached out to shake.
"What year are you? Is this your first year?"
Jade nodded, "yes, it is. This is all very new to me."
Euphemia laughed a little, "yes I suppose it would be, wouldn't it? My son, James, is starting his first year of Hogwarts today also, he and his father have just gone to put his luggage away."
Jade nodded quietly, unsure of what to say next.
The platform was getting louder, both females looked up at the clock hanging from the ceiling. 10:50am. The train would be leaving at 11am.
"I'll tell you what, I'll help you put your luggage and we will find James. That way you both will have someone to sit with on the train, yes?"
Jade looked up at the woman gratefully, "I would really appreciate that. I'd hate to be the girl who spends the train ride on her own."
Euphemia laughed again, "I understand that. I was the exact same way."
The older woman held her hand out and Jade took it. Her parents had always warned her away from strangers, but Jade felt as though she could trust Euphemia. She was so kind when she really had no reason to be towards a complete stranger.
The older woman led Jade through the huge crowd of people, closer down the other end of the train where people were lining up with trunks and bags. Euphemia craned her neck, she was quite a tall woman, looking around the people.
"James? Fleamont!" she called out.
"Over here mum!" a voice called back to their left.
A short black-haired boy ran towards them. He wore a dark blue sweater and a pair of black pants. He had glasses on also.
"Ah, James. Where is your father?"
James pointed his thumb back into the crowd, "back there somewhere."
It was apparent that James had then noticed the girl who was standing beside his mother holding her hand.
"Who are you?" he asked rather rudely.
"Oh James, remember your manners," Euphemia scolded, "this is Jade Frey."
Jade waved slightly, dropping Euphemia's hand as she did, "hi."
James nodded, "hello, are you a first year as well?" his question wasn't as rude as the last one.
The boy moved closer as Jade nodded. As he got closer, Jade noticed he had the same hazel eyes as his mother.
"Yes, I am a first year."
"You're a muggle-born too? I don't think Frey is a wizarding name."
"Yes I am muggle-born."
"Cool! Want to sit with me on the train? You probably don't know anyone else here yet."
Jade smiled widely. She'd just made her first friend in this new world.
Euphemia turned around and smiled fondly at the two of them. She then glanced up at the clock. The two children followed her gaze. 10:55.
"Time for the two of you to get on the train. Jade, we will get your luggage on darling."
It was then that Jade noticed the man standing beside the kind woman. She looked much like James, only taller and older. He wore glasses, and had dark brown hair, whereas James's hair was black. The man was also a little more rounded in his midsection. Jade gave him a small wave. She received one back. Euphemia gave both children a hug, which wasn't something Jade had expected but accepted anyways. James then grabbed Jade's hand and pulled her along the train. They boarded and instantly ran to find a window so that they could wave to Euphemia and James's father.
Euphemia blew kisses and waved to them as the train began to move, while her husband just waved and smiled.
Jade felt as though she had a family in the wizarding world, and it had only been a few hours.
