Edward had decided to have as few regrets as he could, he felt that instead of being fustrated or angry about something that he did wrong, he'd learn from that and make his mistake a stepping stone instead of a weight around his neck. But every now and then things that had happened, things that had gone wrong weighed on him.
For instance most of the time he wasn't grateful that he had lost Al's body, but their journey and the end result was the most important thing, but sometimes he really wished he hadn't suggested the human transmutaion.
And most of the time he wouldn't say that using himself as a philosphers stone was the best idea he'd ever had, it was the best given the ulternatives. He had never told Winry what he had done, he was too scared that she would over react. But there were times when he really wished that the metal rod which impaled him in the North had been closer to his side than though the middle, or that he'd been able to dodge it.
Those times didn't happen very often because he made himself focus on other more important things. But some times, like tonight he was over wellmed with regret as he watched Winry sleeping next to him. She was a few months pregenat and sometimes Ed just couldn't shake the feeling that something would go wrong while he was asleep, and thus he couldn't do anything to help Winry or their child.
Ed smiled as Winry turned over in her sleep and muttered something about not getting up just yet. At times like this Ed wondered if he wouldn't have been better off never proposing to Winry, then he would imange her married to some one else, and he'd know he'd made the right decision. Because even though that other guy didn't exist Ed still didn't like him.
Winry's eyelids fluttered as she woke. "What are you doing?" she asked sleepily.
"Watching over you and Baby." Ed responed stroking her hair.
"Nothing will happen while you sleep Ed, I promise, both Baby and I will be here unscathed when you wake. Now excuse me but I need the bathroom." Winry said getting up.
As Ed watched his wife walk off down the hall, he wondered too himself if maybe he was over reacting just a little. But before he could go very far down that line of thinking Winry was back and cuddled up to him.
He liked these times, lying in bed with Winry right next to him, holding her as close as he could, not thinking about times past, or how at some point in the future he would have to tell her that he'd turned himself into a philosphers stone twice. Other people witnessed the second time, so he hadn't been able to keep that from her. Looking up at him she saw the worry on his face so leaning over him she gave him a kiss. She ment it to be a quick light kiss, Ed had other ideas, pulling her closer he wrapped his hand in her hair. After much struggling Winry pulled away and smiling at Ed lay back down slightly further away than she had been.
"What's wrong?" Ed asked as she lay away from him.
"Nothing, I just want to go to sleep, so goodnight."
