People say weird things. They say they'll give things their best, but they don't. They say they'll always be there for you, me or some other person, but they almost never are. And they say a lot of other weird things, but I cannot write them down – it would take too much space and patience, and I'm not exactly the most patient person in the world. And you would half dead by the time you read a quarter of it.

So. Promises.

I once read a story – or better yet, watched it – about a certain girl and a certain boy – they weren't close friends, but she was his only friend, and he had sort of a special place among her many friends – and their promise. Actually, it would be more of a promise she forced on him. Still, I do not think that lessens its value.

As I said, the girl and the boy didn't spend very much time around each other, but the moments they did spend together were treasured. She was his guardian, in a way, and that was partially the reason for the promise. One night, he told her to meet him in their place, because he had something very important to say. At first, it seemed like she wasn't going to come, but she did, and he told her that he was leaving their town. She told him all the boys are leaving town. He said they did, true, but that he had a different reason, and that he wanted her to know what it was.

She asked him to promise her that, if he got famous and if she's in need of his help, that he would come save her. The boy was puzzled at first, but when she told him that she wanted to experience being saved by her hero at least once, he just became reluctant. You see, he wasn't a very confident boy, and he didn't want to promise – or so I think, because there is no clear reason, just hints and guesses – because he was afraid that he would fail. In the end, he agreed, because she said something along the lines of 'Come on! Promise me!', and the boy hated to disappoint.

So. The first part – the easy part – was over.

Many years later, she was in a really big bind – close to death and all – and he came. But he came late. Even in the later years, he was always late, and it was always some very important thing that he missed. Nevertheless, the girl forgave him, each and every time. And each and every time, she wondered why, but there was no answer. Finally, after all the serious situations were behind them, and the two had become a family of sorts (they weren't married, they weren't even together, they were just living in the same house, best friends now, with two adopted children), and he had started coming home – or anywhere else for that matter – on time, the girl, now a young woman, realized why she forgave him. You can guess, but we all know the answer: yeah, yeah, she was in love with him.

Many people have watched what I watched and read what I read about the two of them. Most of them hope for a happy ending, with lots of kisses, romance, and happy hours. I do too, no matter how cheesy, or corny or ultimately lame it sounded. But the thing is, their promise was fulfilled – he always tried to come and save her, and no matter how late it was, the fact that he did proves that there is still something in the words "I promise."
