Silver eyes, a trait desired by everyone around the world. Scientists have tried their hardest to replicate that extremely rare and elegant trait, but try as they must, no one has been able to do it. While many people were envious of the beautiful title of having silver eyes, Ruby didn't understand why everyone wanted it. Sure, they were pretty and all, but what they don't know is that silver eyes were the cause of the Rose family line's death and possible extinction. Ruby Rose was the last of the silver eye generation, born from Summer Rose who died while Ruby was very young.
Yang Xiao Long was Ruby's sister, as her dad would tell her, but Yang knew she wasn't completely related to her supposed sister. They were half-sisters, but only Yang knew that. She knew for the longest time, and figured it out once Ruby was brought home from the hospital for the first time. Once Yang saw those silver eyes, she knew that Ruby was different. She was like her mother instead of her father.
A few years after Ruby was born, the two sisters noticed something was wrong with their mother. And although their father said she was fine, Ruby knew something was up. No matter how many times her father had lied about what happened that very day, she knew the truth.
October 30th, 2010, at 11:36pm—
Seven years ago, 24 minutes before her youngest daughter's birthday, Summer Rose had committed suicide.
Ruby had walked into her mother's room the next morning, excited for her 8th birthday. But when she opened the door, she saw her mother hanging from the ceiling, her silver eyes were lifeless. From that moment, Ruby felt a pain around her neck that began to glow. She was choking, her airway felt as if it was being restricted. She was dying, she knew she was. It hurt so much, she could feel herself slipping away from reality as hot tears ran down her cheeks. And just when she was about to croak, she closed her eyes.
When she opened them, she wasn't in heaven or hell. She wasn't anywhere else, but rather in the same place. How could that be? Shouldn't she be dead?
Well, here's the thing: Ruby didn't die. (Obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be finishing this chapter.)
That was the moment when she realized she was dying, but she can't die. Something was keeping her from leaving this world. And she didn't know what it was. But all she knew was that it hurt. The pain she was feeling was unbearable. Emotional turmoil over her mother and the unknown pain around her neck. She went back to her room and sobbed quietly, her throat hurting too much to get any noise out.
From that moment on, Ruby had felt that pain ever since. She didn't understand why or how, but she didn't care for reason anymore. Her neck doesn't glow super brightly anymore, which she is thankful for, but it still glows dimly and still hurts by great amounts. She hides it well, and no one seems to suspect a thing. She only tries to believe her dad's lies to lessen the pain.
And it worked for a while.
Whenever the pain came back, however, she would train in a large forest. She says fighting Grimm takes her mind off of all the memories. Usually, Yang would tag along and train with her.
But a few days ago, Ruby had decided to train alone.
The forest that she would frequently come to was just beyond Beacon Academy's campus. Beacon Academy was known for its intense hunting program, earning its title for the most prestigious hunting academy in the entire world. Ruby had always wanted to go there and become a huntress in honor of her mother.
In two years she'd make that a reality. Currently, as a 15-year-old, she was moving onto her second year at Signal Academy, a school that trains their students in preparation for the hunting academies.
But after an encounter that day with the headmaster of Beacon Academy, her entire life had changed.
She was training alone in the forest, and after defeating her 8th Grimm, there he stood, the headmaster of Beacon. Professor Ozpin.
"You are Ruby Rose, are you not?"
Without words, Ruby nodded her head quickly. She knew everything about this man after researching Beacon for a long time, and yet seeing him in person felt as if he was a complete stranger.
"Your sister, Yang Xiao Long, she will be attending my school this year, correct?"
Again, Ruby nodded.
"I usually hear some fighting coming from below these cliffs, and I must say, after watching many of your training sessions, you definitely have what it takes to be a huntress. How would you like to attend Beacon Academy?"
With that, Ruby didn't know how to respond. But without hesitation, she nodded once more. Ozpin nodded back, leaving the dumbstruck girl standing there.
Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain on her big toe.
Falling to the ground and clutching her hurt toe, Ruby yelled out, "Dang it Yang, quit stubbing your toe!"
She knew it was Yang because this has happened many times in the past. She didn't know why it would hurt herself as well, but she knew that it was Yang. Sometimes Yang would hurt herself on purpose, and Ruby hated whenever she did that.
After the pain wore off, she went back home to tell her dad and her sister about the news. While her father was hesitant in letting her go, he allowed it in the end, but the emphasis on his words could not have been any more clear than they already were.
"Ruby, I'll let you go, but under no circumstances are you allowed to make any friends. They're dangerous, no matter what they look like."
Ruby didn't fully agree with his terms, but she didn't argue. She never fully understood why she couldn't make friends, but she always obeyed her father. Yang, however, always encouraged the opposite of her father. Whenever their father would speak to Ruby about the subject, Yang would always protest.
"Dad, do you really think she'll be able to keep that up for the next four years? She needs friends to lean on, people that can help her!"
Those two never saw eye-to-eye on the subject, their arguments always leaving Ruby on edge. The argument usually ended with Yang leaving and talking to Ruby about making friends.
She always encouraged Ruby to make friends, but Ruby never mustered up enough courage to do so.
But with or without friends, both were excited to be going to the same school at the same time.
That excitement for Ruby died down as soon as they got onto the airship. Knots formed in her stomach as she looked at the other people. She had never been anywhere with so many people in one place, older people might I add. They were all at least 17 while Ruby was only 15.
"Yang, why do I have to be the youngest one here?"
Ruffling Ruby's hair, she smiles. "Not every 15-year-old can be as amazing as you, Rubes."
The blonde wasn't wrong there, but Ruby still wonders why she had to be the one with such talent and skill. Looking around, she saw many students who probably couldn't compare to her uniqueness. Although they were all unique in their own way, Ruby thought that she was different. Not just in age or appearance, but just…
Different.
Traits are different in everyone, from their semblances to their physical appearances. But Ruby felt more different than anyone. She felt as if she had a fault, a burden to carry that nobody else had.
Deciding not to get too deep into her thoughts, she looked out the window and saw snippets of the academy. As the airship landed, she cleared her mind and made her way to the hangar door. Students were crowding the large door, waiting for it to lower down and reveal the illustrious campus.
The large hangar door finally lowered down and released all of the new students onto the campus. Looking around for her sister, Ruby realized that Yang was already out of the airship. As Ruby pushed through the crowd to reach Yang, she bumped into a stack of white suitcases and fell down, the suitcases falling on top of her.
"Ow, that hurt," Ruby moaned as she stood back up.
"Unbelievable! Don't you realize the damage you could've caused?!"
Turning around, Ruby was met with an angry girl in white. Never having actually faced another person that wasn't her family, she froze in shock.
The girl in white picked up one of her suitcases and opened it, pulling out a small bottle of what looked like red glitter.
"This is Dust, mined and purified from the Schnee quarry. Is any of this getting through to your tiny brain?" As the girl in white spoke harshly, she waved around the bottle of Dust she held. "How are you here anyway? I don't remember the most prestigious hunting academy ever letting in a child onto their property."
After waving around the bottle too much, some of the dust leaked out and floated in the air. Ruby inhaled it by accident and caused a huge explosion via sneezing. The girl in white was no longer white, but rather covered in ash.
Ruby had done it now, the girl in white was fuming.
"You complete and utter dolt! You could've blown us off of the cliff side!" she berrated, dusting off some of the ash on her shoulders and face.
Too embarrassed to say anything at all, Ruby disappeared in a flurry of rose petals, one of the perks given by her semblance. She can run away with a huge burst of speed, and rose petals will billow behind her.
"You're not even going to apologize?! What the hell?!"
Ruby ended up hiding behind a tree, still keeping her attention fixed on the angry girl in white.
"Sorry," she whispered.
She felt drawn to this girl, and although she was prohibited from making friends, Ruby wanted to meet this girl properly more than anything. Somehow, she felt one in the same with this angry, white…
How would Ruby describe her? She seems insecure on the inside, but acts bratty on the outside.
A chicken? Ruby smirked to herself, almost laughing at the dumb nickname. It didn't fit the situation in any way, but Ruby found it to be funny.
Yeah, this girl was an angry, white chicken. In Ruby's mind at least.
"Rubes?"
Hearing her name being called all of a sudden caused her to jump. "Yang, don't scare my like that!"
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Why are you hiding behind this tree? And what are you smiling about?"
Ruby's face was slowly turning as red as the cloak she wears. "N-nothing! It's nothing at all!"
Yang obviously didn't buy it, but shrugged it off. "You haven't seen the whole campus yet, have you?"
"No, I haven't."
Grabbing her sister's arm, Yang dragged her out from behind the tree and to the campus paths. "Then let me show you around. I think you'd really like the training simulator."
—
"…ugh, to think they let a child go to Beacon, and then she knocks over my stuff without apologizing? Who does she think she is? As if my day couldn't get any worse—"
"You! You're Weiss Schnee, aren't you?"
The girl in white, whose name is Weiss Schnee, turned to face a girl dressed in black with a bow on her head. Weiss glared at the girl, getting an idea of what could be hiding underneath her bow.
"What's it to you?" she spat.
"I'll have you know that I will not be associated with dirty liars like youor your family."
"Dirty liars?! How dare you speak of me and my family in that way?! The Schnees work harder than anyone in the world, and I expect only the highest respects from someone like you."
The girl with the bow crossed her arms and glared coldly at Weiss. "The Schnees or their Faunus slaves?"
She walked off without another word, making Weiss more furious than ever. Her first day at Beacon had already gone down the drain.
"Hmph. I don't need you, I don't need anyone," she said to herself. "People are a waste of time. I won't associate with a lowlife like her."
Even without knowing the girl personally, Weiss knew what she was trying to hide.
"Faunus scum."
—
Yang was right, Ruby did like the training simulator. She could train in any environment imaginable and go up against any Grimm it could conjure. And although it came very rarely, Ruby was thoroughly impressed. In the past, Yang had tried countless times to impress Ruby, but never succeeded with every attempt. Ruby didn't really have anything to be impressed about, so Yang had eventually given up on that, letting Ruby become fascinated on her own.
Although the maps throughout the campus were relatively easy to follow, Yang found herself struggling to find the way to certain buildings. She had been on this campus before, why was she suddenly struggling? Ruby ended leading her around the campus, which Yang was not quite fond of.
As the students began making their way to the main hall for the opening ceremony, Ruby caught a glimpse of the Angry White Chicken. She still seemed mad, but for a different reason. Ruby didn't know that reason, but was glad that she wasn't mad at her anymore. At least for now. Ruby made one mistake, however, and that was staring at the Chicken for a little too long. The girl in white caught Ruby staring at her and immediately glared daggers as she stomped over to her.
"You! You're the one who knocked over my belongings without apologizing! Do you have anything to say?!"
Yang intervened, confused on the situation. "Yikes, what did you do Rubes?"
"Why was it my fault? It was her fault for leaving her luggage there!"
"My fault? It was you, you dolt, who carelessly walked right into my neatly-placed belongings! You have nobody to blame but yourself."
"You're the one who put your stuff there in the first place!"
"You're the one who walks without watching where you're going!"
Yang separated the two before the problem escalated even further. "Alright, alright. If you two are going to be fighting, at least let me grab my friends so we can place bets. Sorry Rubes, but I'm betting on Sassy over here."
"Hey! I am not sassy!"
"Yang, you're not helping!"
Laughing loudly, Yang placed her hands on both of their shoulders. "Alright. For starters, why don't you both start over and apologize?"
The angry white chicken crossed her arms and turned the opposite direction. "Hmph. As if. You know, for a girl with silver eyes, you sure don't live up to that title."
This hurt Ruby a little. She wanted to meet and get to know this girl, but she made it so hard. Holding her hand out, Ruby mustered up as much courage as she could. "Hey, um, I don't know your name, but I just want to start over and be your…your friend."
"Then you'll have to try a lot harder than that."
Walking off in her angry white chicken-y ways, Ruby sighed in defeat as she collapsed to the ground.
"Rubes, you want to be friends with her? She's a total nutcase!" Yang sat down with Ruby as the other students walked by.
"Its not about the fact that she has anger issues, Yang. It's the fact that she's just like me."
That girl was just like her. Even if Ruby doesn't know her yet, she could feel the emotional pain and scars that have built up inside that girl. They were both the same. They were both alone.
There's the first chapter! Of course we'll be starting with the short chapter first and get into the longer ones soon.
Until next chapter!
