When Fate Steps In

The library was empty, save for two teens arguing. Well, actually, the blonde one was yelling and the albino was staring at him, twirling a strand of hair.

Matt really hadn't meant to, really he hadn't. In fact, if given the opportunity, he would've gone anywhere else that particular evening. But the gamer had a test to study for, so he loaded up on books and walked around the shelves, headed for the tables.

The redhead couldn't see where he was going over the pile of books he held, so he couldn't really avoid bumping into his best friend.

So his best friend shouldn't have gotten so angry when he fell forward, landing into Near, his lips touching with the albino's.

But, alas, Mello did get angry. Mello jumped away from his rival to face whatever had hit him. Once he locked on Matt, there was nothing the redhead could do but run for his life.

"I'm gonna kill you!" Mello growled, rounding a corner in hot pursuit of the boy.

Matt whimpered, diving into a broom closet and locking it behind him. Sure, he might be stuck in there now. But it was better to be stuck inside a closet then in the clutches of the blonde when he was this deadly.

"Get out here you fucker!" Mello yelled through the door, pounding on the slab of wood that separated them, intent on breaking it down. More curses and death threats flowed from the blonde's lips as he continued to beat at the door. After a while, the sounds ceased and Mello left.

Matt thought it was over, that was until the door gently swung open, Mr. Rogers standing there with the key, and Mello behind him, murder in his eyes.

That night Mello set Matt straight, scared him to no end, and made him promise to tell no one of what he'd done and caused. That night Mello also brushed his teeth five times and rubbed his lips 'till they chapped.

The next morning Mello had nearly forgotten the whole ridiculous ordeal. It wasn't important after all, wasn't even worth thinking about. Still, Mello couldn't forget about it just yet. If people found out his lips had touched Nears, even on accident, his reputation was done for.

After breakfast Mello headed for the playroom. That's where Near would be, after all. He needed to make sure the ivory boy didn't tell anyone about what had happened yesterday.

When he got there Near was building a city of blocks, a white bunny plushie sitting on a throne in the middle of it all. Mello looked around, making sure no one else was around, before clearing his throat.

"Near," Mello spoke, the white haired boy looked up at him.

"Yes Mello?"

Mello twitched slightly. Near didn't seem affected in the least by what happened last night. "Um. Yea. I came here to um, tell you something," Mello stated, stuttering more then he would've liked.

Near just stared at him, waiting for Mello to tell him whatever he had come to tell him.

"Yes, well. Um, about last night." Damn my nervousness, Mello thought. "Let's pretend it never happened. So please don't-" He redid his voice so that it sounded more threatening. As he did this Near stood up. Mello began his threat," Don't speak about that to-"

Near leaned forward, kissing the blonde to shut him up.

After a moment or two, Near removed his lips, taking in the blonde's expression.

Shocked.

Mello stared at Near with wide eyes."…"

Near turned around, going back to his toy city and sitting back down. He picked up a block to begin building again, and smiled.
