Another Hero Lost by Tanith Night

Disclaimer: I own the world and everything in it, up to and including the boys from Gundam Wing. Why am I in a room with padded walls and oh, what an interesting jacket.
A/N: This was originally suppose to be a longer story, but I just couldn't the words right. This small song fic was the result. The song is by Shadows Fall and called Another Hero Lost from the Threads of Life album. I always picture this to be Zechs and Duo, but it can really be any pairing. The only evidence of it being Duo is the violet eye reference. I hope you all enjoy it.
I joined the military when I was 18, signed up for a six year tour. I am now 23 years old with less than seven months to go. When one signs on that dotted line you never think that you may go to war. I know I never did. I must admit I was somewhat excited to be going off to a distant land to serve my country and strike down my enemy. I was excited until I met the other half of my soul.
I'd never leave you
But fate has come to silence me
Darkness is all that I see
I cannot reach you
And soon the earth will cover me
It's become so hard to breath
Forever is waiting
The final steps you're taking
Will soon be buried in the sands
The days were long and hard. My only thought day in and day out was to do the best damn job I could and maybe, just maybe, I will come home to his waiting arms. We received orders to infiltrate an old building in the middle of town. We never saw the ambush coming.
He lay among the rubble propped up on a beam slowly bleeding to death. With cautious movements he raised his arms and grasped the edges of the helmet. Ever so slowly the helmet was removed, gently placing it in his lap. His bloodied fingers took hold of the photo. A snap shot in time of his perfect family. He clutched the photo as if it could save him. Alas his eyes closed to never open again.
All of the battles
They say we won
They leave another thousand lives undone
Another thousands lives undone
The final steps you're taking
Will soon be buried in the sands
There was a knock on the door. The young man rose from the couch. Three men stood at the door dressed in military dress blues. They spoke with a solemn tone of voice saying that his loved one perished in the line of duty. Tears filled large violet eyes. Head shaking in denial and quivering chin were the only signs the three men had before two shaking hands covered his face and the person before them collapsed. His body was wracked with sobs and a repetition of denial streamed from his mouth.
You're gone, but not forgot
Another hero lost
The sorrow builds with every passing
All the lessons that you taught
And all the light you brought
Lives on in the eyes of your son
A small voice was heard in the hallway. Seconds later a small boy was being embrace and told of the honor of their fallen love one. Parent and child cried together.
