"Hey Honeypaw!"

I looked up at my friend Leafpaw. "What?" I asked.

"Wanna go hunting?" Leafpaw asked.

I shrugged. "Nothing better to do." I followed my calico friend out of the camp, all while she chatted excitedly.

"I wanna catch a squirrel! Okay, maybe not a squirrel, they're too hairy. I'd like to try a thrush, I haven't had one since I was a kit. Lizards are too Shadowclan, but I think that it would be nice to try one...I guess I'll try for a mouse, they're easy to catch – MMFF!" Leafpaw was cut off as I shoved a paw into her mouth.

"Now if you're done, we can hunt," I growled. Leafpaw nodded, amber eyes wide. "Good." I took my paw out of her mouth. Instantly, she began to jabber away like a songbird.

"What's your favorite type of prey? Mine's blackbird. But I can't catch birds very well. My mentor, Dawntail, says that it's because I talk too much, so much that I scare prey away. But I don't think that I talk too much. My voice is really high though. Wow, I never noticed that. It's like, squeaky. I like it! It's like a mouse's voice. Speaking of mice, I think that they're really funny tasting. I mean, they're all-"

"Please, just shut up!"

Leafpaw sighed. "Ugh, fine, Honeypaw. You're so, like, against talking. I mean, really, would it hurt to say at least five sentences a day?"

"I say more than five sentences a day!"

"Oh sure-"

"WOOF!"

The bark of a dog interrupted Leafpaw. Her eyes widened. "W–was that a–a dog?" she asked, voice trembling.

I nodded. "It's coming from the left," I hissed.

"WOOF!"

"Is it just me, or are the barks getting closer?" Leafpaw asked nervously.

I snorted. "It's just you."

That's when the dogs burst out of the trees and skidded to a halt in front of us.

Leafpaw started freaking out. "We're gonna die!" she shrieked.

"Let's fight 'em!" I shouted.

"No, let's not fight them!"

"Too late!"

The dogs hurled themselves at us, snapping at our throats with powerful jaws, long nails ready to slice through our flesh, eyes filled with a hunger for blood. Cat blood.

I was dimly aware of Leafpaw snarling meekly at the dogs, if that was possible. I slashed at the dogs, and fixed my teeth in the smaller dog's flank.

Suddenly, Leafpaw's terrified cry split through the air. "Honeypaw! Help meeeee!"

"Leafpaw!"

The calico she-cat was cornered by the larger dog against a tree. She whirled around and tried to dash up it, but the dog caught her tail and dragged her down.

"Leafpaw, I'm coming!"

I ran forward and jumped on the dog. The other one rushed to me and grabbed by neck, yanking me off the larger dog's back. The dog flipped me over, and opened its huge mouth.

"Honeypaw!"

Leafpaw ran forward, prepared to leap on the dog.

It was too late. The dog's teeth sank into my throat, and everything went dark.
