Hope

A/N: Just a simple oneshot about a pivotal moment in Rose and Mickey's relationship post-Doomsday…

It was three months after that day at Bad Wolf Bay. Mickey was walking Rose home after another of their "dates".

Mickey looked at Rose. She was looking at the stars. No. She was watching…waiting…hoping. He sighed.

They had been "dating" for two months. It had been Jackie's idea. She had hoped that getting back together with Mickey would help Rose move on. He knew it was doubtful but Mickey would do anything to try and help Rose.

He was making good money at Torchwood now. So he took her out to lunch everyday, dinner at least twice a week, and a movie on Fridays. He knew it wasn't working at all and was really only hurting him. But, he was scared of what Jackie would do if he "broke-up" with Rose.

The two continued to walk in silence. They walked up to the door of the Tyler Estate. Rose finally tore her eyes from the sky and looked at Mickey.

"I had a good time," she smiled, half-heartedly.

Mickey looked down. She said that every time.

"Me too," he sighed.

Rose put her hand on his shoulder and leaned in to kiss him on the cheek.

Mickey was tired of this routine! He decided to try a change. After Rose kissed his cheek, he grabbed her by her waist and pulled her towards himself to kiss her for real.

She pushed him back before he could.

"What are you doing?" she asked. He was surprised. She didn't sound or look mad; just disappointed. He knew it was time.

"Can we stop pretending, Rose? It, well, it hurts too much to hope that you'll get over him!" Even though Mickey was mad, he knew better than to say "The Doctor". She would have broken down.

Rose was looking down, "I'm sorry Mickey."

He softened. He knew Rose better than anyone. He could tell she was crying.

Mickey pulled Rose into a hug. He rubbed her back trying to soothe her.

"It's alright. We were good together at one time. But you moved on to bigger and better things," Mickey told her softly.

Rose looked at him then, "Don't say it that way!"

"It's true though! I could ever compete with a man who could love you with two hearts,' Mickey half smiled.

Rose laughed a little, "Maybe it's time you moved on to bigger and better things yourself."

"Move on, yea. But bigger and better? Probably not," Mickey said as he wiped a tear from Rose's cheek.

"You're gonna make some girl very happy,' Rose told him, very honestly.

"Too bad it wasn't you," he replied, just as honest.

"Too bad…" Rose sighed.

"So, we're…breaking up?" Mickey asked.

"I think that's best," Rose said. She didn't think she could feel an ounce more pain after being left by The Doctor, but knowing she and Mickey were done, surprisingly did hurt.

"Right. You're telling your mum though!"

The two laughed. Before leaving, Mickey kissed Rose on the cheek.

He turned and started to walk away. As Rose got her key out, Mickey turned back to her.

"Rose?"

She turned to face him, "Yea?"

"Well, I've been thinking. My department at Torchwood's been working on this new project that I'm sure you're gonna want in on," Mickey said as he walked towards Rose.

"What kind of project?" Rose asked curious.

"A dimension cannon," Mickey explained. "It's supposed to be able to shoot you across universes."

Rose's eyes widened. She ran to Mickey and hugged him.

"Thank you so much!" She pulled back. "You think it'll work?"

"Well," Mickey smiled, "we can hope!"

THE END!
