Things change.

It's inevitable; nothing anyone can do can stop things changing because simply stopping things changing changes things.

It's an expected part of life. People grow up, they mature and they move away.

People also die. It's a horrible thought, but everyone will die eventually, whether it is a few decades after their birth, or a few centuries. Everyone dies.

Everything changes.

Perhaps the most amazing thing life does is adapt, it copes we cope. People cope in different ways, but we all cope one way or another. Someone passes over, we grieve and then we move on. We cope with a loved ones death and we continue to live our lives.

But what if you can't grieve over the loss of a loved one, because that loved one is still there.

What if the person you knew, and the person you loved is gone, but they're not. What if you still talk to them on a daily basis? What if you still live with them? How can you grieve for someone that isn't really dead?

That is Rose's dilemma. Her loved one, the Doctor as she knew him, is gone yet he is still there.

He looks different and acts a little strange, but he is essentially still by her side. He is still saving the worlds they visit, and he is still her constant companion. So how does she grieve for her friend's death?

She can't give him a funeral as he isn't really dead, and she can't put him to the back of her mind because he is still with her everyday.

How does she cope with his loss?

She still loves him, the new him, as she loved the old him. She still has the feelings for him and so she can't leave him. It's impossible for her to go back home and leave him travelling around the universe without her because then she would die herself. She can't imagine her life without him and she really doesn't want to.

Whatever happens, and however she copes with the loss of the first Doctor she knew, she knows in her heart that he will always be by her side. He is different, yet he is the same and she will always love him.

She will cope with his loss by embracing his presence.
