A/N: Not mine. Sirius is Ms. Rowling's. The song is Richard Farina's.
Please R-n-R. I rather like this bit. No slash this time, I think… not even
any swears… wow. Clean for me. Read on!
Bold Marauder
[It's hi, ho, hey, I am the bold marauder!
It's hi, ho, hey, I am the white destroyer!]
Sirius closed his eyes, staring at the red velvetine canopy over his bed. His mind was alive with the intoxicating power of the song that he'd always held for himself, ever since having heard it on a record of his far- traveling aunt's. He'd chosen it as his theme song the first time he'd listened to it at age seven, and immediately run next door to his best friend James' house to tell him about the song that fit perfectly their crazy partnership. Now he reflected on it, hummed its melody softly to himself, the lyrics running through his mind like Padfoot after a squirrel.
[For I will buy you silver and gold and I will bring you treasure
And I will bring a widowing flag and I will be your lover
And I will show you grotto and cave and sacrificial altar
And I will show you blood on the stone and I will be your mentor
And night will be our darling and fear will be our name]
Now the song fit all of them but still it was his closest. He'd discovered it and now it ran in his blood, he was the teacher yet the student, the warrior of light who used the weapons of darkness. He was the bold marauder. He was the white destroyer. He hunted. He howled.
[It's hi, ho, hey, I am the bold marauder!
It's hi, ho, hey, I am the white destroyer!
For I will take you out by the hand and lead you to the hunter
And I will show you thunder and steel and I will be your teacher
And we will dress in helmet and sword, and dip our tongues in slaughter]
He knew his secret. He knew he'd begged the Sorting Hat to keep him in Gryffindor, even if it did say he had great potential for Shadow, whatever that was, but Sirius knew enough to know that he had a dark side. A side dark enough to understand the savagery of Remus' wolf. He'd never hurt his friends, oh, goddess, no, but an enemy? He was aware of the fact that at some point he'd have to kill someone – and they would be evil – and he wouldn't care.
[And we will sing a warrior's song and lift the praise of murder
And Christ will be our darling and fear will be our name
It's hi, ho, hey, I am the bold marauder!
It's hi, ho, hey, I am the white destroyer!]
To kill a man. No matter why, it is supposed to give one a horrible guilt, even at the concept. Sirius didn't get that. He merely notcied… a resignment in himself. He knew he could do it – use the Dark Arts against the Dark Mages. The white destroyer… Padfoot! Future Auror! All of them would be, they were all bold marauders, and each had a darkness of his own. Each knew their own secrets and shared each others'.
[For I will sour the winds on high and I will soil the rivers
And I will burn the grain in the fields and I will be your mother
And I will go to ravage and kill and I will go to plunder
And I will take a Fury to wife and I will be your father
And Death will be our darling and fear will be our name]
He let the last strains of the song trickle through his mind, the last lyric line echoing in his mind again as he smiled at the darkness within. ~If I must have shadow,~ he thought, ~then I wish to know it and own it. It's hi, ho, hey, I am the bold marauder….~
