I thought I had things figured out. I thought I was over it. Over her. And I was. At least until I saw her again. It was at a nightclub, downtown. The place, The Lagoon, was relatively new. I had been going every free weekend since it opened four months ago. I never went alone. Sometimes I went with Nigel and other times I went with Lily. On a rare occasion we'd all go together. Garret wasn't thrilled with the place but I know that he enjoyed the company. We were a family after all. A very dysfunctional family but a family none the less.

On this occasion I was there with Lily and Bug. I guess you could say that they invited me along to make sure nothing went too far between them on their first date. They were out on the dance floor dancing to a fast moving song that had a good beat and I was sitting at the table minding my own business just taking in the sights. I don't know what compelled me to look towards the far right corner but I did and there she was. The last person that I wanted to see. She was sitting alone with a martini lazily clutched in her hand. I don't know how long I had looked but when I finally averted my attention Lily and Bug were already back at the table, talking quietly to each other. I couldn't help the smile that had slid onto my lips. They seemed so perfect together. Both a little strange but had hearts of gold. When they excused themselves to partake in another dance I ventured another glance in her direction but she gone. Letting out a breath that I had been holding, I made my way towards the bathroom where I stood for a good twenty minutes looking into the mirror and splashing cold water onto my flushed face.

When I was sure that I looked relatively relaxed and my heart had slowed, I returned to the crowd feeling slightly better. I avoided the dancers as I returned to our table and sat back down but I failed to notice that the table was no longer empty. One other person was sitting there and it wasn't Bug or Lily. My calmed heart began to pick up speed until it was racing. Swallowing, I didn't move. I didn't break my line of sight on the dancers. I searched the crowd for Lily and Bug finally catching Lily's attention. With a lick of the lips I motioned my head towards the door and gave her a faint smile before grabbing my jacket and making a hasty exit. I'd explain later and Lily knew this. It wasn't the first time I made the great escape. Usually it was to get away from some overbearing, overly drunk individual who wanted nothing more than to get into my pants. But not tonight. Tonight I was running, plain and simple. Once outside I took a long, slow, breath. The cool Boston air felt good against my heated flesh. A noise behind me caused me to turn so suddenly that I lost my balance but instead of falling I felt myself caught and steadied. I knew it was her before I even looked up. "Hello Lisa." It came out as a husky whisper and I wanted to kick myself for it. When her eyes locked with mine, I knew I was lost. I couldn't run anymore because I had reached my destination.
