"Are you sure you want to go?" asked Jace. Himself, Clary, Isabelle, and Alec were all waiting outside of the Institute, waiting for Clary to make a portal to Alicante. It had been a year since the Dark War with Sebastian's Endarkened warriors and they wanted to go and visit Idris. Surprisingly, right when they had got back, the Institute had been very loud and everyone was celebrating, even though there was quite a loss from the Shadowhunters. Clary and Isabelle had been unusually quiet lately, but Jace knew why, Simon. Alec, on the other hand, had been pretty happy because he told Jace he got back together with Magnus.
"Jace, I've made several portal before. I'll be fine." Clary said, her emerald eyes shining in the early spring sun. Jace knew it was true. She had made a lot of portals before, and she knew how to work them, but he just didn't want her to get hurt in the process.
"Okay. I'll go tell Alec and Izzy." he said. He walked over to the rest of them and started saying something, then motioned for Clary to go to the wall.
She took out her stele and put it to the wall, drawing her own portal rune. As she drew, Jace watched her carefully like a watchdog, always on guard. Her lines were evenly distributed as they went over one another. When she was done, she finished with a slight flick of the wrist, just as Jace had taught her. The rune glowed for less than a second, and then opened up into blue- purple portal.
Jace went in first, then Alec, then Isabelle, and finally Clary. Jace had almost forgotten what being in a portal was like. It tossed you around like you weighed nothing. It's like a tornado, Clary had once said to him. And it was true, it was like a tornado.
Jace, Alec, and Isabelle had all landed on their feet. Clary still hasn't gotten used to landing yet, and landed on her back.
Jace looked around and it didn't look like anywhere in Idris at all, especially not Alicante. "Where did you plan to come in Idris again?" Jace asked, just to make sure she planning on coming Alicante.
Clary looked around. He could tell she didn't recognize the place either. "Alicante, but I've never been here before."
"That's impossible. Portals can only take you to places you've been before." Jace chimed in.
The landscape was truly beautiful, Jace thought. They were in what looked like a mini woods. To their right was huge sloping hill that just went down to more woods. And to their left was a barbwire fence that looked only about ten minutes to walk to.
"Jace! Earth to Jace!" he knew that voice, and spun on his heel to see Isabelle glaring at him. "You need to stop staring into space when we don't even know where we are. We have to find out what to do." she said, frustrated.
"I know what we should do." Alec said. It was the first time he had spoken since they got through the portal. "Let's go over to that fence and check out what's on the other side."
Jace nodded, and so did the rest of them. He didn't know what was beyond the fence, but he agreed to going over to it.
