"Teenage Love Affair"

CHAPTER ONE

Today's the first day of 11th grade, and I couldn't help but feel anxious. I think that something unexpected will happen today. I don't know why, though.

By the way, I'm Laney Collins, 17 years old and as invisible as ever. Why? Don't ask me. I've been this way ever since grade school. People ignore me, and I ignore them. That's the main thing everyday in Harper High. You can say that I'm the wallflower of the class, or maybe the weirdo. Whatever. I don't care.

Somewhat.

To tell you the truth, I'm not really that invisible. I have a friend, Olive, who shared her lunch with me in 3rd grade. We became inseparable ever since. So now, I don't really sound much of a loner anymore, but still, majority of the student population in Harper don't seem to notice me much, as I've already told you. Boys? Hmm. That's another topic.

Tutoring is my hobby. Yeah, yeah, call me a nerd. But it really is. I just find it refreshing to teach younger kids about things they have trouble understanding. I just feel like it's my duty to let them know all about this academic stuff and not get them bored or anything.

So, speaking of which, here I am now, sitting behind a long table full of papers and pens, and a lot of kids waiting to get forms to fill up so that they could get assigned to a specific tutor. Suddenly, Paulina, my co-tutor, came up to me and said, "Hey Laney, do you mind if we could switch schedules?"

"Uhh… Why? "

"It's just that theater practice is also on Friday afternoons, and I think I might just die juggling two things at once!"

"Oh, okay. But aren't you assigned to 11th Grade students?"

"Yeah. Is there a problem?"

"The tutor is always supposed to be at least a grade higher than the one he or she is teaching." Wow. I sounded like the tutor manual Mrs. Mitchell, our adviser, gave us on our first day. "I'm in 11th grade, and if we switch, I'll be tutoring 11th graders, too." I shuddered at the thought of having to teach my awful classmates who always pick on me. Ugh! What would they do if they see me?! I have to get that thought out of my mind!

"But, see, I already talked to Mrs. Mitchell about it, and she said she'll make an exception."

Uh huh.

I just stared at Paulina.

"Sooo!? Are you game for it?"

Am I?

Paulina gives me the good 'ol puppy dog look, and I almost instantly remembered the days when she was the one helping me adjust to this tutor life.

"Yeah. Sure."

And just like that, my world is coming to an end.
