I do not own Hetalia: Axis Powers, I just enjoy writing about the characters.

Each time they parted, the pain grew worse. Conventional thinking would suggest that it should be the opposite, multiple separations desensitizing them to the aching loss. Instead, the pain grew sharper as though a knife was slowly entering their hearts with each mile, driving it deeper.

Alfred faced out the window so that the tears pouring down his face would be less obvious. He chose to fly commercial airlines because they provided anonymity, something he could not get on a government plane. This travel was so impersonal and it allowed him to slowly regain his composure before he needed to be cheerful again. It was harder than anybody realized to be constantly happy, or at least appear that way. Only Matthew saw beneath the façade to his true emotions.

They had an entire week together in Niagara Falls, their favorite place along their shared border. Each day had flown by as they enjoyed the scenery and each other. They spent time in nature, both entirely comfortable no matter whose land they were on.

It ended far too soon. Both men still had work to do for their government in order to keep their respective countries running smoothly. Being a nation made it almost impossible to maintain a romantic relationship, but Alfred and Matthew made it work. It was difficult, often leaving them both hurt when problems arose, but they still managed to stay together. It was small respites such as this that made it happen.

Still, the parting was all the more painful after such a wonderful time. Even knowing they would be able to talk didn't truly help. It softened the blow but the wound remained. They would continue to come together when they could. The pain was a small price to pay for the bliss they shared when they were together.
