I've recently gotten interested in Warriors again... and I'm rereading the series for at least the fifth time xD Anyways, as Firestar/Sandstorm is my FAVORITE couple, I'm writing this quick one-shot for them. I hope you like it! Disclaimer: I do not own Warriors, or the characters. Erin Hunter does.
"I win!"
"You cheated!"
"Oh, so now being a better hunter is cheating? I didn't know."
"Better hunter?"
"You heard me."
"Well, you may be able to catch more prey, but no way will you beat me back to camp!"
Without another word, Firestar launched off his hind legs and took off at full speed into the forest. Her eyes filled with amusement, Sandstorm raced after him, not wasting a second. Did her mate really think he could outrun her? No cat in the entire clan could outrun her, even with a head start. Still, it was all the more fun to win a race that way.
The forest was a green blur as the two cats darted around trees and through the undergrowth, manoeuvring expertly through the territory they both knew so well. Picking up extra speed, Sandstorm darted ahead, trailing just behind Firestar to make it seem as if he was doing better than her. He spared a glance back at her, the excitement evident in his eyes, and then threw himself forward, racing ahead even further. With a quiet mew of amusement, Sandstorm easily caught up with him, allowing him to barely hold the lead. A few strides later, the edge of the ravine came into sight, and the pale ginger she-cat took on a last burst of speed, and skidded to a halt right at the edge of the ravine. Looking back to the forest, she saw Firestar come to a stop next to her.
"You could at least let me win once in a while!" the clan leader complained, pretending to be annoyed. Sandstorm calmly licked a paw and drew it over her ear, pausing before replying.
"You know how I am," she mewed. "I'm always fair. How fair would it be to let you win if I can beat you?"
With a mischievous glint in his eyes, Firestar, leaped at her, sending them both tumbling down the ravine. Sandstorm let out a meow of surprise, and then quickly leaped up as they reached the bottom. When she looked back, Firestar was calmly licking his paw as she had been doing before, acting as if nothing had happened. The she-cat crouched low, and launched herself at her mate, but he was ready, and the two of them playfully scuffled on the ground until Sandstorm managed to pin him.
"I win again!" she announced, as Firestar let out a sigh.
"Okay, I admit it, you're the best at everything. Can I please get up?"
"Beaten by a she-cat again Firestar?"
The two of them looked up to see their best friend, and the deputy, Graystripe, sitting at the top of the ravine with a few pieces of fresh kill at his paws, shaking his head.
"Firestar has finally accepting that I'm the best!" Sandstorm boasted teasingly, letting her mate stand up. With a mew of amusement, Graystripe picked up the fresh kill and made his way to the bottom of the ravine, giving his friends a nod, and heading through the gorse tunnel into the camp. A second later, Dustpelt appeared over the edge of the ravine and ran down with more fresh kill in his jaws.
"And you made us carry all of your fresh kill back," he muttered through the mice he was carrying, rolling his eyes before disappearing through the tunnel. Firestar's ears twitched in amusement, and then he turned to Sandstorm.
"Are you hungry?" he asked.
"Starving," she replied. "All of that winning sure tires you out."
To prove that point, she leaped onto him again, catching him by surprise and pinning him quickly.
Just another reason I'm in love with her, Firestar thought happily.
