"Sokka?" Toph asked quietly. "Sokka, are you asleep?"

Sokka opened his eyes and stared at the flames of the campfire. The gentle crackle of the woods mixed with the nocturnal whispers of the woods. Snores from his team mates. The hum of bugs. The rustle of the breeze. The grunts and scamper of animals. Only Toph's little voice broke the serene night atmosphere.

"Sokka?"

"What is it, Toph?"

"What are you looking at right now?"

Sokka rolled over to his stomach so that he was closer to the earthbender. "The fire? Why?"

"I was just wondering."

In the moonlight, Toph's pale skin glowed. The shafts of light filtering through the trees gleamed in her gray eyes. Sokka thought she looked like a doll when she was still like this. Tiny and fragile. He laughed a little because he knew that was far from the truth.

She turned on him then with an angry expression. "What are you laughing at?"

"You."

"Well, sorry for wanting to appreciate a pretty night. Whatever. I'm going to sleep." She rolled over and kicked up a wall of earth between her and Sokka.

"I'm sorry."

"Whatever. I don't care."

In the quiet that followed, the howl of a moosewolf could be heard.

"Toph, are you asleep?"

"Yes."

Sokka stood up and peaked over the earth wall. Toph was curled up in a ball, pouting, eyes wide open and staring at the grass. "No, you're not. Liar."

"Leave me alone."

"You're the one who woke me up, first."

"You weren't asleep. I could tell from your breathing."

Pulling his sleeping bag closer, Sokka lied back down. Even though the wall separated the two of them, it didn't make much difference. He knew Toph was listening to him from the other side, knowing his every movement. He tried to lean in as close as he could. He didn't know why. He wanted to be closer to her. As if he wanted to hear her breathing, too.

"Hey, Toph. What are you listening to right now?"

"You, idiot."

Sokka rephrased his question. "What do you usually listen to before you fall asleep?"

Instead of replying, she yawned and asked. "What do you usually look at when you're falling asleep?"

"Hey, I asked you first."

It took a few moments before he heard her whispered reply. "You."

Sokka gulped down the lump in his throat and stared at the sky. Unsure of how to reply, he waited a few minutes until he thought Toph was asleep. At last, he sighed deeply and rolled over, knowing this whole conversation would be forgotten by the morning.

"Sokka, you never answered my question." Her voice startled him from the edges of slumber.

"What?"

"What do you look at when you're falling asleep?"

"You."
