It was a banquet that night and Rangiku was sitting idly listening to the other shinigami talk about various boring things. The current topic was what music they all preferred. Tired of the topic she walked outside to get some air. As she moved down the steps of the building she heard someone call her name.
Turning back she looked up and there he was looking back down at her. He grinned and with that grin came a feeling of warmth and comfort sweeping through her entire body. To others it would have been unsettling but to her it just meant he was back. His eyes as clear as a brisk morning sky twinkled with a glint of amusement that reached his face; the smile was like the sun coming up after a long dark endless night. Her rock was back.
He pulled her up towards him but didn't hold her close, he didn't have to. All they did was hold hands. Look at each other as everyone around them talked about how odd it was that they could be a couple and be so different. It didn't matter to the two what they were talking about, it didn't matter what they thought, it didn't matter that all those people were stupid and shallow. All that mattered was that they themselves knew.
As she stood there looking into his eyes, his eyes that could only be described as love, she felt at home; at peace.
A safety that could not be broken.
A shelter that would always be there.
She felt safe;
Safe from pain and grief,
He was there and nothing could touch her.
He reached up and put one hand at the back of her neck and the other hand on her face. Thumb touching the center of her forehead with his other fingers lightly tracing her cheek. His eyes were like nothing she had felt before, staring into her, giving a sense of security and trust and love and undeniable comfort. All that mattered was that they were together. The rest of the world disappeared, the people sitting around them, talking about them, it all disappeared; all there was was him and that look on his face. That look that she would never forget for the rest of her life. That face made her realize what love really was.
He whispered something to her
Joy and love swept through her like a tidal wave that couldn't be stopped no matter how hard she tried
A smile slipped across her face and tears came to her eyes
Such a little thing and yet
There it was
She had never felt anything like it. This is love.
and then she woke up.
But she would never forget.
