"You were here for the money"

"Maxon, I-." He interrupted me and continued.

"You were her for the luxury, riches, and the food."

"No, you don't understand!" I wailed, begging him to listen, to tell him it was just a big misunderstanding.

"No, dear." He said the word with so much hate I visibly flinched. "It is you who has been mistaken." He scoffed.

"America you never loved me. But I understand, after all what was there to love?"

"Maxon, I loved you. I love you. Plea-"

"Lady Singer, I think it would be the best for both of us if you were quietly dismissed from the Selection"

I couldn't help it. The tears trailed down my face.

"My love, don't cry" He wiped away a tear with his thumb. " It's entirely my fault. I thought I could make you love me. I thought maybe we could make this work. I was so foolish. I should have known a beautiful and charming girl such as you would have had a special boy back home."

"Maxon, I love you" I pleaded. He gave a sad smile.

"I can't wait for you forever America. I went against everything I was taught. I put myself in ridiculous dangerous situations for you. I thought I loved you. I thought you felt the same way. There is a chasm between us which demands to be crossed. I kept wishing you would meet me in the middle, but you never did"

I began to protest but he stopped me.

"Lady America, nothing you will do or say will affect my decision. Your maids have already been informed of your elimination and they are currently packing your bags. Don't even try to redeem yourself. Any respect you had from me was destroyed when I saw you in the arms of, that guard."

I closed my eyes, remembering the scene so clearly it hurt. Aspen had kissed me forcefully, against my will, and I was physically too weak to push him away. His hands snaked up and down my body as I protested. But my screams were drowned by his lips on mine. At the worst possible moment, Maxon came in and immediately jumped to conclusions. He wouldn't listen to me. Obviously, Aspen was immediately stripped of his title and sentenced to be an Eight. Apparently, Maxon had decided to be a bit more merciful to me and he said the public eye would not be clued in to the reason of my sudden dismissal.

"Goodbye, Lady America" And with that, the love of my life walked away. And I was left completely and utterly shattered.
