Lacey had known she was different from everyone else for as long as she could remember. Her strongest hint came when she first got into a fight. A gang of bullies had been tormenting her friends, and she decided she had had enough. She yelled at them, telling them to back off. Instead, the biggest of the bullies took a swing at her. The punch connected, bruising her face badly. As Lacey stood there, however, the pain began to subside. The group looked at her face in awe.
"Her bruises! What happened to them?!"
"What are you, a superhero?"
Lacey was still focused on the bully who had hit her. She felt an overwhelming wave of anger just looking at him, and took a step towards him. As she moved closer, the bully fell to the ground, clutching his head and screaming in pain.
"Why are you so angry with me? Please, make it stop!"
She stood over him, confused. She hadn't done anything to hurt him, that she knew of at least. She met his eyes, and could hear his thoughts.
It hurts! Please, why are you so angry at me? I didn't mean to hurt you! Just leave me alone!
Lacey was shocked. She had just heard somebody else's thoughts! She started tuning in to others' thoughts, testing her new power. She even tried talking with her mind to some of her friends. It made for quite the party trick, but it could be a real drag. She learned to control her power, and started using it in amazing ways.
She began to talk to people who seemedto be sad all the time, and she made many close friends and made many people much happier.
Eventually, though, people began to ridicule her for being so different. It started out behind her back, so hidden that her mind reading barely caught it half the time. After a year, it had gotten so bad that she had to confront her closest friends multiple times when they ridiculed her. Lacey quickly began to lose friends and popularity. Soon, she was almost completely alone.
Lacey didn't think her situation would get better, but that all changed when she met 2 people who were different, kind of like her.
Lacey had had a particularly bad day, with people ragging on her even more than usual. She was walking home, ready to just get the day over with, when she saw a sight that she would never forget. Her house had been completely destroyed, and neither her parents nor any of her family were anywhere close. She was about to see if anyone she knew was around, but before she could, 2 people walked up to her.
"You've got to get out of here. It's not safe for anyone to be out here." The voice of the person on Lacey's left was calm and reassuring.
Lacey decided that for now, she would follow these strangers. They at least seemed friendly towards her.
